Two weeks after infracallosal electrolytic fimbria-fornix lesions, Long-Evans female rats received intrahippocampal suspension grafts of either fetal septal or mesencephalic raphe tissue, or a mixture of both. Ten months after lesion surgery, the concentrations of alanine, aspartate, GABA, glutamate, glutamine, glycine, serine and taurine were determined in a dorsal, a "middle" and a ventral region of the hippocampus. We found neither the lesions nor the grafts to have significantly modified the concentration of these amino acids which, in all groups, presented a regional heterogeneity in their hippocampal distribution.

The oropharyngeal swallow of 10 patients with mild dysphagia at 3 weeks after a cerebrovascular accident (stroke), 10 normal subjects, and 8 neurologically impaired patients with moderate to severe dysphagia was studied videofluorographically to examine the effects of 2 bolus temperatures (room temperature and 33 degrees F), 2 volumes, and 2 viscosities on the durations of pharyngeal stage swallow events and the frequency and nature of oropharyngeal swallowing problems and bolus transit. Normal subjects exhibited significantly longer pharyngeal response times and longer laryngeal elevation only for 1 ml cold liquid. The stroke patients and the 8 significantly dysphagic neurologically impaired patients exhibited very few significant effects of temperature on swallowing disorders or swallow measures.

Background: No study has examined the nature and extent of swallowing impairment in oral cancer patients following treatment with combined hyperthermia and interstitial radiotherapy. Few studies have examined the effects of voluntary swallow maneuvers (supersupraglottic and Mendelsohn) on pharyngeal phase swallowing in the oral cancer patient treated with surgery or radiotherapy. This study examined the effects of combined radiotherapeutic salvage treatments of hyperthermia and interstitial implantation and swallow recovery using swallow maneuvers in a surgically treated and irradiated oral cancer patient.

This study examined the effects of bolus volume and viscosity and the variability of repeated swallows in ten stroke patients and ten age-matched nonstroke subjects. The ten stroke patients demonstrated single unilateral cortical (three subjects), subcortical (six subjects), or brainstem (one subject) infarcts on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans at three weeks post-ictus. All subjects underwent videofluoroscopic swallow studies in which seven temporal pharyngeal swallow measures were examined.

This study examined the effects of three swallow maneuvers: (1) the supraglottic swallow (voluntary closure of the vocal folds prior to the swallow); (2) the super-supraglottic swallow (airway closure at the level of the arytenoid to base of epiglottis); and (3) the Mendelsohn maneuver (voluntary prolongation of laryngeal elevation and cricopharyngeal opening during swallow) on swallow functioning in a 47-year-old patient who underwent right composite resection for a squamous cell carcinoma of the right retromolar trigone. All maneuvers were employed during the same videofluorographic (VFG) swallow study conducted 6 months after the patient's surgery. Biomechanical analysis of 3-mL swallows defined the extent and timing of tongue base retraction to the posterior pharyngeal wall, laryngeal elevation, laryngeal closure and cricopharyngeal opening during swallows with and without maneuvers.

Forty-seven patients, 29 with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and 18 with presumed irritable bowel syndrome, including one with uncomplicated diverticular disease, were studied with simultaneous technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime and indium-111 oxine labelled leucocyte scans performed at 1, 3 and 24 h. Twenty-seven patients with IBD had active disease as judged by clinical and laboratory criteria and all of these had positive scans with both agents. No false positive studies were obtained.

The preparative conditions for 186Re(V)DMSA and 188Re(V)DMSA (DMSA = meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid), beta-emitting radiopharmaceuticals that have been shown to localize in medullary thyroid carcinoma, require modification depending on the amount of carrier rhenium and the chemical form and medium in which the rhenium is supplied. Preparative conditions are described for use with carrier-free 188ReO4- in saline, and for use with 186ReO4- in saline, sodium hydroxide or nitric acid. Preparation of 186Re(V)DMSA (carrier present up to 2 mg per 2.

Binding of nuclear proteins from wild oat aleurone protoplasts to the promoter regions of two gibberellin-regulated wheat alpha-amylase genes (alpha-Amy1/18 and alpha-Amy2/54) has been studied by gel retardation and DNase 1 footprinting. Gel retardation studies using 300-430 bp fragments of the promoters showed similar binding characteristics with nuclear extracts from both gibberellin A1-treated and untreated protoplasts. DNase 1 footprints localised binding of nuclear proteins from gibberellin A1-treated aleurone protoplasts to regions in both promoters.

The plant hormones GA, ABA, and auxin differ from the majority of animal hormones in that they are hydrophobic weak acids. They are soluble in the inter- and intra-cellular environments of plant tissues and their neutral species can cross the plasma membrane by passive diffusion. Auxin transport is mediated by specific uptake and efflux carriers in plasma membranes, and there is some evidence for carrier-mediated uptake of GA and ABA.

This study was designed to determine whether swallow rehabilitation outcomes were affected by the type of evaluation procedure utilized by the clinician. The two evaluation techniques compared were the bedside examination and videofluoroscopy (the modified barium swallow). Ten institutions participated in this study, enrolling a total of 103 partial laryngectomized patients, 21 in the bedside arm and 82 in the videofluoroscopy arm.

Of several auxin-binding systems that have been characterised the auxin-binding protein (ABP) of maize coleoptile membranes is the best candidate for a true auxin receptor. ABP, which exists as a homodimer of 22 x 10(3) M(r) glycosylated subunits, has been purified, and monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies raised against it. Electrophysiological studies with antibodies indicated the presence of a functional population of auxin receptors on the exterior face of the plasmalemma; electrophysiological experiments with impermeant auxin analogues now reinforce this conclusion.
