Background: Bariatric surgery is the most long-term effective treatment option for severe obesity. The role of gut microbiome (GM) in either the development of obesity or in response to obesity management strategies has been a matter of debate. This study aims to compare the impact of two of the most popular procedures, sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GB), on metabolic syndrome parameters and gut bacterial microbiome and in systemic immuno-inflammatory response.

Recent investigations have proposed the use of bone-supported miniscrews around the midpalatal suture to expand the palate in late adolescents. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy of the Miniscrew Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) technique in young adult patients, by quantifying skeletal expansion in relation to the age of the patient, as well as the impact upon other craniofacial sutures, and to describe the possible dental side effects.

Although there are several animal models for the study of its etiology, the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model has been considered the "Gold standard" because it shows a high degree of similarity to the progression of human sepsis. Currently, it is one of the most frequently chosen options to search for therapeutic alternatives to diminish the progression and organ damage induced by sepsis.

Methods: This is a prospective observational multi-center study of 685 ACS patients.
The use of fluorescent labels is the most common tool to visualize cells. However, the internalization of dye molecules often modifies the cell behavior. In this paper we demonstrate that it is possible to transiently label cells using a 3D scaffold, a hydrogel, covalently functionalized with luminescent cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes.

The aim was to deeply characterize the T cells, those infiltrating SAT and VAT, compared to peripheral blood (PB), in individuals undergoing bariatric surgery. Forty-two adult individuals were recruited, SAT and VAT samples were collected.

The data typically comes from population-level surveys collected by rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), which unfortunately perform poorly in low transmission settings. Here, a high-resolution survey of Plasmodium falciparum prevalence rate (PfPR) was conducted in two Tanzanian districts using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), microscopy, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays, enabling the comparison of fine-scale strata derived from these different diagnostic methods.

Frequently, this complication persists in the long term and could affect the efficacy of the treatment and the patient's life quality. This long-term GI toxicity is thought to be related to OxPt-induced enteral neuropathy.

Cilastatin has demonstrated direct nephroprotective effects in acute kidney injury and now is shown to be effective to specifically target therapeutically loaded nanoparticles to the proximal tubule to treat acute kidney injury.

Sensory neurons damage in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) are the cellular substrate of PN complex molecular origin. Dehydropeptidase-1 (DPEP1) inhibitors have shown to avoid platin-induced nephrotoxicity without compromising its anticancer efficiency.

Currently, multiple drugs have shown clinical benefits in patients with HF and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, evidence is scarce in elderly patients (beyond 75 years old), even more so for the latest drugs, such as angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs).

The role of CD20T cell in AT dysfunction and their contributing to insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes progression, is not known. The aim was to characterize CD20T cells in omental (OAT), subcutaneous (SAT) and peripheral blood (PB) from subjects with obesity (OB, n = 42), by flow cytometry.

Compound [PtCl(OH){(CH)N(CH)NCH(4-FCH)}] (3) was prepared by the oxidative addition of hydrogen peroxide to [C,N,N'] Pt(II) cyclometallated compound [PtCl{(CH)N(CH)NCH(4-FCH)}] (1) and further the reaction of compound 3 with dichloroacetate or trifluoroacetate anhydrides led to the formation of the corresponding compounds [PtCl(CHClCOO){(CH)N(CH)NCH(4-FCH)}] (4) and [PtCl(CFCOO){(CH)N(CH)NCH(4-FCH)}] (5). The properties of the new compounds along with those of the compound [PtCl{(CH)N(CH)NCH(4-FCH)}] (2), including stability in aqueous media, reduction potential using cyclic voltammetry, cytotoxic activity against the HCT116 CRC cell line, DNA interaction, topoisomerase I and cathepsin inhibition, and computational studies involving reduction of the Pt(IV) compounds and molecular docking studies, are presented.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most serious complications of cisplatin anticancer therapies. Cilastatin is a highly promising nephroprotective agent to eventually enter clinical use, but its biochemical mechanism is still not fully understood. We have employed an untargeted metabolomics approach based on capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry (CE-MS) analysis of serum and urine from an in vivo rat model, to explore the metabolic pathways involved in cisplatin-induced AKI and cilastatin nephroprotection.

Moreover, synaptotagmin-1 increases synaptic vesicle priming and impairs spontaneous vesicle release. The synaptotagmin-1 CB domain binds to the SNARE complex through a primary interface via two regions (I and II), but how exactly this interface mediates distinct functions of synaptotagmin-1, and the mechanism underlying Ca-triggering of release is unknown.

The aim of our study was to evaluate different serum and urinary markers of tubular damage in patients with lupus nephritis (LN) and to correlate them with kidney histopathology.
Methods: A single-center retrospective study was conducted from January 2016 to December 2021.
Background: Proteinuria is not only a biomarker of chronic kidney disease (CKD) but also a driver of CKD progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum and urinary tubular biomarkers in patients with biopsied proteinuric kidney disease and to correlate them with histology and kidney outcomes.
Methods: A single-center retrospective study was conducted on a cohort of 156 patients from January 2016 to December 2021.
Contrast-Induced Acute Kidney Injury (CI-AKI) remains a frequent iatrogenic condition since radiological procedures using intra-vascular iodinated contrast media (CM) are being widely administered for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Despite the improvement of the medical healthcare system worldwide, CI-AKI is still associated with direct short-term and indirect long-term outcomes including increased morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with underlying pre-existing renal function impairment, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes that could rapidly progress into Chronic Kidney Disease. Although the RIFLE (Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss, End-Stage Kidney Disease), AKIN (Acute Kidney Injury Network), and KDIGO (Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes) clinical criteria and recommendation guidelines are based on traditional "gold standard" biomarkers known as serum creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, and urinary output, new reliable serum and urinary biomarkers are still needed for an effective unified diagnostic strategy for AKI.

Although AFB1 and OTA were tested in a similar percentage, the majority of studies focused on nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, immune toxicity and neurotoxicity in which oxidative stress, inflammation, structural damage and apoptosis were the main mechanisms of action reported. Conversely, several biological compounds were assayed in order to modulate mycotoxins damage mainly in the liver, brain, kidney and immune system.
