Recently, a novel mec gene conferring beta-lactam resistance in Staphylococcus aureus has been discovered. This gene, mecC, is situated on a SCCmec XI element that has to date been identified in clonal complexes 49, 130, 425, 599 and 1943. Some of the currently known isolates have been identified from animals.

The latter mechanisms seem to be of vital importance in the pathophysiology of sudden cardiac death. We performed an immunohistochemical analysis on 62 cardiac tissue specimens derived from individuals of young and middle age who had died of sudden cardiac death.

Carnitine, a chemical analog of choline, has been used as adjunct in the management of cardiac diseases. The study investigates the effects of choline deficiency on myocardial performance in adult rats and the possible modifications after carnitine administration.

The purpose of this study was to indentify HPV genotypes, as well as E6/E7 mRNA expression of high-risk HPVs (16, 18, 31, 33 and 45) in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) from 45 Greek patients. The overall prevalence of HPV DNA positive OSCCs was 11.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFImaging mass spectrometry (IMS) represents an innovative tool in the cancer research pipeline, which is increasingly being used in clinical and pharmaceutical applications. The unique properties of the technique, especially the amount of data generated, make the handling of data from multiple IMS acquisitions challenging. This work presents a histology-driven IMS approach aiming to identify discriminant lipid signatures from the simultaneous mining of IMS data sets from multiple samples.

The tumor suppressor gene PTEN (10q21) regulates the HER2/PI3K/Akt signalling pathway. Our aim was to evaluate PTEN protein expression in NSCLC based on a quantitative analysis method correlating also the results with clinicopathological parameters.

The hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is declarative memory loss, but deficits in semantic fluency are also observed. We assessed how semantic fluency relates to cortical atrophy to identify specific regions that play a role in the loss of access to semantic information. Whole-brain structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were analyzed from 9 Normal Control (NC)(=76.

We studied the expression of these CAMs in prostate cancer (PCa), high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) and nodular adenomatous hyperplasia (NH).
Materials And Methods: 135 paraffin blocks of radical prostatectomy specimens were assessed.
This study evaluates the exposure level of primary school children at three different towns in northern Attica, near the banks of the Kifissos River, defining referential values of toxic heavy metals. Concentrations of five toxic metals (arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead and nickel) were analyzed in water samples from the Kifissos River as well as in the scalp hair of children aged 11 to 12 years old living in the study area. Chronic low-level toxicity of lead and cadmium came into view in recent years as a problem of our civilization.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the immunohistochemical expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH-2), and p53 in actinic keratosis (AK) and SCC and detect any differences between invasive and preinvasive squamous epidermal lesions. Forty-three cases with AK, 38 with SCC, and 9 with SCC arising on AK (SCC/AK) were studied.

No aneurysm-related mortality among patients treated with this technique has been described in the literature to date. We describe a case of rupture of an aortic aneurysm previously treated with a multilayer stent.

After a pilot study in wild type mice, performance of 8- and 16-month-old tg2576 mice were assessed in several behavioral tasks with the challenge of selecting 1 or more task(s) showing robust memory deficits on this genetic background. Water maze acquisition was impossible in rd homozygotes, whereas Y-maze alternation, object recognition, and olfactory discrimination were unaffected by both the transgene and the rd mutation.

L-dopa decarboxylase (DDC) has been documented as a novel co-activator of androgen receptor transcriptional activity. Recently, it was shown that DDC gene expression is significantly higher in patients with PCa than in those with BPH. In the present study, there was a significant association between the DDC gene expression levels and the pathological stage and Gleason score of patients with prostate cancer (PCa).

Introduction: LFA-1 is an adhesion molecule which belongs to the β2-integrin family. Overexpression of LFA-1 in hepatic natural killer cells has been associated with increased apoptosis of neoplastic cells in colorectal cancer (CRC); moreover, studies in CRC have linked LFA-1 overexpression in neoplastic cells with vascular intrusion through adhesion to endothelial cells, thus implying a possible role in creation of metastases.
Aims And Methods: We studied the expression of LFA-1 in a series of 82 patients with CRC.
We evaluated the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placental growth factor (PlGF), and hypoxia-inducible factor 1-a (HIF1-a) in melanoma angiogenesis and investigated their expression in dysplastic nevi, as potential melanoma precursors. In addition, we examined a possible correlation of VEGF expression with PlGF and HIF1-a. These factors were detected immunohistochemically in 95 melanomas of all types and stages and in 28 dysplastic nevi.

Although they were initially considered inhibitors of tumor growth and metastasis, recently their role in cancer progression has been controversial. The aim of our study was to compare the immunohistochemical expression of TIMP1 and TIMP2 between an uncontrollably invasive phenomenon (cancer) and an "in situ" process (trophoblast invasion) in an effort to assess any differential role of these molecules between these two distinct phenomena and therefore to understand better their contribution in cancer invasion and migration.

However, it is unclear if acidosis per se rather than hypercapnia is responsible for this beneficial effect. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the effects of hypercapnic (respiratory) versus normocapnic (metabolic) acidosis in an ex vivo model of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI).
