Waste heat is ubiquitous; as such, sustainable and long-lasting devices are required to convert it into more useful forms of energy that can make use of this abundant potential resource. Thermogalvanic cells (or thermocells) can use the thermoelectrochemical properties of redox couples to achieve this; entropy-driven redox reactions allow them to act as liquid thermoelectrics. However, excellent electrocatalysis at the electrode surface is required for optimum conversion efficiency.

High rates of employment changes and associated concerns among cancer survivors following diagnosis and treatment suggest a need to examine what employment-related educational resources and support are currently being offered to cancer survivors and what gaps exist in those resources. In 2023, we conducted a content analysis of employment resources described on the websites of the NCI-Designated Cancer Centers that provide clinical care (N = 64) through a systematic review procedure using predetermined search terms and a standardized process to examine the availability and accessibility of such resources. Descriptive analyses were conducted to characterize the employment resources identified.

Classical axon guidance ligands and their neuronal receptors were first identified due to their fundamental roles in regulating connectivity in the developing nervous system. Since their initial discovery, it has become clear that these signaling molecules play important roles in the development of a broad array of tissue and organ systems across phylogeny. In addition to these diverse developmental roles, there is a growing appreciation that guidance signaling pathways have important functions in adult organisms, including the regulation of tissue integrity and homeostasis.

  • The study reviews the impact of preoperative interventions on improving the outcomes of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.
  • Eight studies were analyzed, focusing on interventions like hand exercises, cholecalciferol supplementation, and pneumatic compression, with hand exercises showing the most effectiveness in increasing vessel size.
  • The findings suggest that while hand exercises are beneficial and well-tolerated, there is a need for more rigorous research to assess their efficacy compared to other interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • Thermogalvanic devices can turn low-grade waste heat (<200 °C) into electricity through an electrochemical reaction driven by a temperature difference.
  • The study focuses on cobalt (II/III) sarcophagine compounds, examining how different solvents affect their thermogalvanic performance.
  • Results show that the Seebeck coefficient, a measure of voltage generated, varies significantly with solvent type, indicating that the ionic charge from surrounding groups enhances the electrochemical process in specific low-dielectric solvents.

Background: Classification of hypochondriasis as an obsessive-compulsive and related disorder in the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11) has generated new heuristics for treatment of this common, chronic and disabling disorder. Standard treatment involves cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), but no meta-analysis has so far considered hypochondriasis as a structured diagnosis or assessed the role of medication. A clearer understanding of the relative effectiveness of these interventions and identification of clinically relevant factors moderating the treatment response is needed for clinical guideline development.

Introduction: Despite promising results from several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses, the efficacy of r-TMS as a treatment for OCD remains controversial, at least in part owing to inconsistency in the trial methodologies and heterogeneity in the trial outcomes. This meta-analysis attempts to explain some of this heterogeneity by comparing the efficacy of r-TMS in patients with or without resistance to treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), defined using standardized criteria.

Methods: We conducted a pre-registered (PROSPERO ID: 241381) systematic review and meta-analysis.

Nonplatelet thromboxane generation, stimulated largely by oxidative stress, is a novel mortality risk factor in individuals with coronary artery disease. Though inversely associated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), a potential role in the pathobiology of heart failure (HF) remains poorly defined. Nonplatelet thromboxane generation and oxidative stress were assessed by measuring urine thromboxane-B metabolites (TXB-M) and 8-isoPGF by ELISA in 105 subjects taking aspirin and undergoing right heart catheterization for evaluation of HF, valve disease, or after transplantation.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) is an important semiconductor for electronic and photovoltaic applications, particularly when utilized as a thin film for window layers in CdTe solar cells. Deposition of thin-film CdS through the decomposition of single-source precursors is an attractive approach due to the facile, low-temperature, and rapid nature of this approach. Tailoring the precursor to affect the decomposition properties is commonly employed to tune desirable temperatures of decomposition.
