Excitation spectra of protonated and deuteronated anthracene are obtained by triple-resonance dissociation spectroscopy. Very cold cations, protonated/deuteronated exclusively at the 9-position, are generated from two-colour two-photon threshold ionisation of 9-dihydroanthracenyl radicals (CH). The excitation spectra reveal rich structure, not resolved in previous studies, that is assigned based on anharmonic and Herzberg-Teller coupling calculations.

Researchers need approaches for analyzing complex phenomena when assessing contingency relationships where specific conditions explain an outcome only when combined with other conditions. Using a mixed methods design, we paired configurational methods and qualitative thematic analysis to model contingency in veteran community reintegration outcomes, identifying combinations of conditions that led to success or lack of success in community reintegration among US military veterans. This pairing allowed for modeling contingency at a detailed level beyond the capabilities of either approach alone.

High-resolution velocity-map imaged photoelectron spectra of the ethynyl anions CH and CD are measured at photon wavelengths between 355 and 266 nm to investigate the complex interactions between the closely lying X̃Σ and ÃΠ electronic states. An indicative kinetic energy resolution of 0.4%, together with the full angular dependence of the fast electrons, provides a detailed description of the vibronically coupled structure.

Stable isotopes are routinely employed by NMR metabolomics to highlight specific metabolic processes and to monitor pathway flux. C-carbon and N-nitrogen labeled nutrients are convenient sources of isotope tracers and are commonly added as supplements to a variety of biological systems ranging from cell cultures to animal models. Unlike C and N, P-phosphorus is a naturally abundant and NMR active isotope that does not require an external supplemental source.

Bonding in the ground state of C[Formula: see text] is still a matter of controversy, as reasonable arguments may be made for a dicarbon bond order of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], or [Formula: see text]. Here we report on photoelectron spectra of the C[Formula: see text] anion, measured at a range of wavelengths using a high-resolution photoelectron imaging spectrometer, which reveal both the ground [Formula: see text] and first-excited [Formula: see text] electronic states. These measurements yield electron angular anisotropies that identify the character of two orbitals: the diffuse detachment orbital of the anion and the highest occupied molecular orbital of the neutral.

High-resolution velocity map imaged photoelectron spectra of the nitrite anion NO are measured over a range of photodetachment wavelengths between 355 and 550 nm, resolving the vibrational and rotational structure of the NO() + ← NO() + transition. A full rotational band model is constructed to define the spectroscopic constants of both the neutral and the lesser studied anion ground states. The corresponding photoelectron angular distributions are characterized by a large positive anisotropy parameter, with β ≈ 1.

Vinylidene-acetylene isomerization is the prototypical example of a 1,2-hydrogen shift, one of the most important classes of isomerization reactions in organic chemistry. This reaction was investigated with quantum state specificity by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy of the vinylidene anions HCC- and DCC- and quantum dynamics calculations. Peaks in the photoelectron spectra are considerably narrower than in previous work and reveal subtleties in the isomerization dynamics of neutral vinylidene, as well as vibronic coupling with an excited state of vinylidene.

The chemistry of NO, a key atmospheric trace gas, has historically been interpreted in terms of the C isomer ONO, with the peroxy isomer NOO only postulated to be stable. In this work, a velocity-map-imaged photoelectron spectrum of the nitrite anion, NO, reveals energetic-electron structure that may only occur by photodetachment from the NOO(X̃A') isomer. This measurement defines NOO(X̃A') bond frequencies and an electron affinity of only 335(30) cm, which, supported by ab initio calculations, confirm the first observation of this important reactive species.

The attenuation of a diverse suite of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and bulk water quality changes was evaluated at a surface-spreading aquifer recharge operation across a detailed subsurface profile (9 locations), representing both short- and long-travel times (10 h to 60 days). Seventeen CECs were detected in the recharge basin and the concentrations of all were reduced during soil aquifer treatment (SAT), with 11 of the target compounds attenuated by >80% after 60 days of travel time. Select CECs (atenolol, gemfibrozil, N,N-diethly-3-methylbenzamide, meprobamate, tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate, and primidone) and bulk water organic-carbon measurements (total organic carbon, biodegradable organic carbon, size-exclusion chromatography and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices) were identified as monitoring parameters that can be used to assess SAT performance at surface-spreading operations.

The gonorrhea infection rate among 15-19 year olds during 1993-1994 in an urban Upstate New York community was nearly twice the national norm. More than 50% of all the gonorrhea cases were concentrated in eight census tracts. This study was conducted to provide data regarding sexually transmitted diseases among high risk adolescents to increase successful public health interventions.
