There are an estimated 653,100 people across the United States experiencing homelessness. Homelessness is an important social determinant of health associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of homelessness among hospitalized patients is substantially higher than the community prevalence, and people experiencing homelessness (PEH) are more likely to be admitted to the hospital and have longer length of stays and higher healthcare costs relative to stably housed patients.

Background: Distraction therapy use such as virtual reality is novel in the pediatric orthopedic field. In this study, we use subjective and objective metrics to evaluate virtual reality efficacy to reduce anxiety and pain in a pediatric orthopedic cohort.

Methods: A prospective randomized controlled trial included patients between age 5 and 17 years, presenting to a tertiary care pediatric orthopedic clinic.

Background: Thoracic anterior vertebral body tethering (TAVBT) is an emerging treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Tether breakage is a known complication of TAVBT with incompletely known incidence. We aim to define the incidence of tether breakage in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who undergo TAVBT.

In teaching and in practice, little attention is given to a low anion gap. This oversight can result in a missed opportunity to diagnose acute or chronic disorders requiring treatment. In this article, we review the constituents of the anion gap, build a differential diagnosis for a low anion gap using case examples, and provide a stepwise approach to diagnostic testing to evaluate this abnormal finding.

Purpose: Little is known about the perioperative characteristics associated with a posterior spinal fusion (PSF) in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients previously treated with vertebral body tethering (VBT). We aimed to determine if operative time, estimated blood loss, postoperative length of stay, instrumentation type, and implant density differed in patients that received a PSF (i.e.

Purpose: Since the introduction of vertebral body tethering (VBT) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), a variety of post-operative chest drainage systems have been utilized. Most surgeons use formal chest tubes with a Pleur-evac, while others use smaller bulb suction drains (e.g.

Background: Growth modulation through anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) has emerged as a fusionless option for the treatment of progressive scoliosis. When tethering the main thoracic curve, the compensatory thoracolumbar/lumbar curve must correct indirectly as a result. The present study evaluated the response of these lumbar curves following AVBT of the main thoracic curves.

Hospitalized incarcerated patients are commonly shackled throughout their duration of treatment in community medical centers to prevent escape or harm to others. In the absence of overarching policies guiding the shackling of non-pregnant, incarcerated patients, clinicians rarely unshackle patients during routine care. We provide a medical-legal lens through which to examine inpatient shackling, review the limited evidence supporting the practice, and highlight harms associated with shackling in the hospital.
