Background: In patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD), exercise-induced desaturation during the 6-min walk test (6MWT), specifically nadir oxygen saturation (nSpO2) of ≤88 % is a negative prognostic marker. As the 6MWT is often impractical for ILD patients, the aim of this study is to compare the 1-min sit-to-stand test (1minSTS) with the 6MWT to detect exercise-induced desaturation.

Understanding the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors in disease etiology and the role of gene-environment interactions (GEIs) across human development stages is important. We review the state of GEI research, including challenges in measuring environmental factors and advantages of GEI analysis in understanding disease mechanisms. We discuss the evolution of GEI studies from candidate gene-environment studies to genome-wide interaction studies (GWISs) and the role of multi-omics in mediating GEI effects.

A synthetic gene drive that targets haplolethal genes on the X chromosome can skew the sex ratio toward males. Like an "X-shredder," it does not involve "homing," and that has advantages including the reduction of gene drive resistance allele formation. We examine this "X-poisoning" strategy by targeting 4 of the 11 known X-linked haplolethal/haplosterile genes of Drosophila melanogaster with CRISPR/Cas9.

A sharp rise in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) prevalence estimates, beginning in the 1990s, suggested factors additional to genetics were at play. This stimulated increased research investment in nongenetic factors, including the study of environmental chemical exposures, diet, nutrition, lifestyle, social factors, and maternal medical conditions. The program leverages the enthusiasm and contributions of undergraduates nationwide to the benefit of the mission, the students and their institutions and communities, and the broader public. Psyche Student Collaborations consists of four main programs, two (Psyche Capstone and Psyche Inspired) are available solely to undergraduates enrolled at universities or community colleges in the United States and its territories and two (Innovation Toolkit free online courses and Science Outreach Interns and Docents) invite broader participation by engaging the talents and creativity of undergraduate interns to help create content and events to reach the public and lifelong learners.

Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) is a human-adapted poxvirus that causes a common and persistent yet mild infection characterized by distinct, contagious, papular skin lesions. These lesions are notable for having little or no inflammation associated with them and can persist for long periods without an effective clearance response from the host. Like all poxviruses, MCV encodes potent immunosuppressive proteins that perturb innate immune pathways involved in virus sensing, the interferon response, and inflammation, which collectively orchestrate antiviral immunity and clearance, with several of these pathways converging at common signaling nodes.

This novel qualitative study identifies challenges and opportunities to improve dog welfare in Ireland, as perceived by dog welfare organisations (DWOs), a previously underutilised stakeholder. Health services are increasingly being reshaped with reference to addressing social determinants of health (SDoH), with social prescribing a prominent example. We examine a project in the Outer Hebrides that reshaped and widened the local health service, framing fuel poverty as a social determinant of health and mobilising a cross-sector support pathway to make meaningful and substantive improvements to islanders' living conditions. The 'Moving Together' project provided support to almost 200 households, ranging from giving advice on home energy, finances and other services, to improving the energy efficiency of their homes.

Animal models that mimic human infections provide insights in virus-host interplay; knowledge that in vitro approaches cannot readily predict, nor easily reproduce. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infections are acquired asymptomatically, and primary infections are difficult to capture. Purpose: Our research aimed to evaluate the impact of the RHS Wellbeing (WB) Programme on people with long-term conditions.

Findings: A thematic analysis identified how the WB programme facilitated improved social connectivity, sense of wellbeing and purpose through the creation of a 'healthy, natural and safe space' predicated on 'person-centred approaches'. Participants felt they were 'part of something larger' which enabled 'transformation of their health and wellbeing'.

As viruses have a capacity to rapidly evolve and continually alter the coding of their protein repertoires, host cells have evolved pathways to sense viruses through the one invariable feature common to all these pathogens-their nucleic acids. These genomic and transcriptional pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) trigger the activation of germline-encoded anti-viral pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) that can distinguish viral nucleic acids from host forms by their localization and subtle differences in their chemistry. A wide range of transmembrane and cytosolic PRRs continually probe the intracellular environment for these viral PAMPs, activating pathways leading to the activation of anti-viral gene expression.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Superfund Basic Research and Training Program (SRP) funds a wide range of projects that span biomedical, environmental sciences, and engineering research and generate a wealth of data resulting from hypothesis-driven research projects. Combining or integrating these diverse data offers an opportunity to uncover new scientific connections that can be used to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the interplay between exposures and health. Integrating and reusing data generated from individual research projects within the program requires harmonization of data workflows, ensuring consistent and robust practices in data stewardship, and embracing data sharing from the onset of data collection and analysis.
