Background: Acute arterial thromboembolism to the renal arteries can be treated promptly by local thrombolysis, conventional surgical thrombectomy, or anticoagulation.
Methods: We report a patient who presented with acute loin pain as a result of atrial fibrillation-related thromboembolism to the right renal artery supplying his horseshoe kidney. He was already on warfarin treatment with international normalized ratio of 1.
There are scant data in pediatrics on the optimal timing for aortic valve repair (AVR). This study assesses the midterm response to AVR and possible predictors of poor outcome. From 2001 to 2006, 41 patients had greater than 3-month follow-up after AVR for aortic insufficiency, aortic stenosis, or both.

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is a sustainable, efficient way of removing phosphorus from waste water without employing chemical precipitation, but is assumed unachievable in tropical temperatures due to conditions that favour glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) over polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs). Here, we show these assumptions are unfounded by studying comparative community dynamics in a full-scale plant following systematic perturbation of operational conditions, which modified community abundance, function and physicochemical state.

Due to the relatively low metabolic demand and extensive collaterals of the upper limb, peripheral arterial disease seldom leads to tissue loss, except in patients with end-stage renal failure (ESRF), rheumatologic diseases, Raynaud's disease, frostbites, or distal emboli. We report a case of a 51-year-old lady with ESRF who presented to our tertiary referral vascular center with infected gangrene of her right ring finger. Duplex ultrasound showed that her forearm arteries were severely diseased.

High calcineurin-inhibitor levels and hypertension are recognized risk factors for PRES in adult transplant recipients. Limited data exist regarding PRES after pediatric HTx, with studies limited to case reports.

Methods Primary outcome measures included the GSV obliteration, with clinical recurrence on follow up as detected by serial clinical and duplex examinations of patients at 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year. Venous clinical severity score (VCSS), Aberdeen varicose vein questionnaire (AVVQ), Short Form Health Survey 36 Item (SF-36) questionnaires were used at clinical follow up.

Specifically, interest has focused on GH's lipolytic properties and ability to affect adipose deposition. Furthermore, both GH and insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1) may also play a direct or indirect role in adipose development.

This study used a larger sample to examine the effectiveness and sustainability of the programme.
Methods: This study used quasi-experimental design.
Jellyfish sting-induced vasospasm and vasculitis is a rare complication that could lead to severe digital ischemia and gangrene. We report a 39-year-old woman with severe pain in her right middle, ring, and little fingers after being stung by a jellyfish. Therapy was initiated with a course of intravenous iloprost infusion and subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin, with successful revascularization.

Background/objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between weather changes and acute aortic events in a subtropical territory.
Methods: A linear regression analysis was performed in a pan-territory epidemiological survey for a period of 10 years on the impacts of meteorological factors (ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, amount of cloud, rainfall, number of lightning strikes, presence of typhoon, and thunderstorm warning) on the daily incidences of acute aortic dissections and ruptured aortic aneurysms. Meteorological variables were retrieved on a daily basis from a well-established observatory, and the daily incidences of aortic dissections and rupture of aortic aneurysms were retrieved from the Clinical Data Analysis and Reporting System.
Background: Although used routinely, the pleiotropic benefits of statins remain understudied in children after heart transplantation. We hypothesized that statin therapy would reduce the incidence of rejection, cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD).
Methods: This study was a retrospective review of 964 pediatric (ages 5 to 18 years) heart transplant recipients in the multicenter Pediatric Heart Transplant Study registry from 2001 to 2012.
The effect of donor-recipient sex matching on long-term survival in pediatric heart transplantation is not well known. Adult data have shown worse survival when male recipients receive a sex-mismatched heart, with conflicting results in female recipients. We analyzed 5795 heart transplant recipients ≤ 18 yr in the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (1990-2012).

The current study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of onion juice intake on the bone mineral density (BMD) and bone loss in corroboration with antioxidant effects in human (in vivo) as well as inhibitory effects on the differentiation of osteoclasts in the cell line (in vitro). For in vitro studies, the RAW 264.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the hydrated DNA base are peformed using an empirical force field, Born-Oppenheimer ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), and finally path-integral AIMD to understand the role of the underlying electronic potential, solvation, and nuclear quantum vibrations on the absorption spectra. It is shown that the conformational distributions, including hydrogen bonding interactions, are perturbed by the inclusion of nuclear quantum effects, leading to significant changes in the total charge and dipole fluctuations of the DNA base.

This work demonstrates the potential of the near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAPXPS) for studies of processes occurring at the interface between a metal electrode and a liquid electrolyte. By using a model membrane-electrode assembly of a high temperature phosphoric acid-imbibed proton exchange membrane fuel cell, and combining NAPXPS measurements with the density functional theory, it was possible to monitor such fundamental processes as dissociation and migration of the phosphoric acid within a nanostructured Pt electrode under polarization.

Background: Delayed presentation of carotid artery pseudoaneurysm following many years after self-inflicted penetrating injury of the neck is extremely rare. Open surgical carotid repair may involve sternotomy for proximal vascular control. Endovascular treatment is evolving as a less-invasive treatment option.

The research group, Pediatric Heart Transplant Study, has been in step with that evolution over the nearly 20 years of its existence by utilising its registry to contribute a wealth of clinical research to the field. The highlights of its studies will be presented in this review.

Phosphorylation of the presequence of the precursor MORF3 (pMORF3) by endogenous kinases in wheat germ translation lysate, leaf extracts, or STY kinases, but not in rabbit reticulocyte translation lysate, resulted in the inhibition of protein import into mitochondria. This inhibition of import could be overcome by altering threonine/serine residues to alanine on the presequence, thus preventing phosphorylation.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to evaluate whether the assessment of systolic and diastolic graft function, in addition to angiography, improves recognition of patients at high risk of graft loss and to assess the ability of adult filling-pressure thresholds to discriminate graft dysfunction in pediatric patients.
Methods: This study reviewed Pediatric Heart Transplant Study data from 1993 to 2009.
