Purpose: We investigate the influence of moving blood-attenuation effects when using "delay alternating with nutation for tailored excitation" (DANTE) pulses in conjunction with blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) of functional MRI (fMRI) at 3 T. Based on the effects of including DANTE pulses, we propose quantification of cerebral blood volume (CBV) changes following functional stimulation.

Methods: Eighteen volunteers in total underwent fMRI scans at 3 T.

The apoptosis inducing receptor CD95/Fas has multiple tumorigenic activities. In different genetically engineered mouse models tumor-expressed CD95 was shown to be critical for cell growth. Using a combination of immune-deficient and immune-competent mouse models, we now establish that loss of CD95 in metastatic triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells prevents tumor growth by modulating the immune landscape.

Although convergence is often recognized as a ubiquitous feature across the Tree of Life, whether the underlying traits also exhibit similar evolutionary pathways towards convergent forms puzzles biologists. In carnivoran mammals, "elongate," "slender," and "long" are often used to describe and even to categorize mustelids (martens, polecats, and weasels), herpestids (mongooses), viverrids (civets and genets), and other carnivorans together. But just how similar these carnivorans are and whether there is convergence in the morphological component that contribute to elongation has never been assessed.

Quantitative rate determination of elementary reactions is a major task in the study of chemical kinetics. To ensure the fidelity of their determination, progressively tightened constraints need to be placed on their measurement, especially with the development of various notable experimental techniques. However, the evaluation of reaction rates and their uncertainties is frequently conducted with substantial subjectivity due to data source, thermodynamic conditions, sampling range, and sparsity.

Femoral facial syndrome (FFS) is a rare condition which may present with hypoplasia or aplasia of the femora and unusual facies characterized by long philtrum, thin upper lip and micrognathia. We present the case of a ten-month old infant with FFS who had retroglossal obstruction and who was treated with a pre-epiglottic baton plate. The pre-epiglottic baton plate can be a simple, non-invasive and effective tool for the clinical management of syndromic patients with mild-to-moderate upper airway obstruction due to micrognathia.

Transposable elements (TEs) regulate diverse biological processes, from early development to cancer. Expression of young TEs is difficult to measure with next-generation, single-cell sequencing technologies because their highly repetitive nature means that short complementary DNA reads cannot be unambiguously mapped to a specific locus. Single CELl LOng-read RNA-sequencing (CELLO-seq) combines long-read single cell RNA-sequencing with computational analyses to measure TE expression at unique loci.

Dielectric elastomers (DE) are novel composite architectures capable of large actuation strains and the ability to be formed into a variety of actuator configurations. However, the high voltage requirement of DE actuators limits their applications for a variety of applications. Fiber actuators composed of DE fibers are particularly attractive as they can be formed into artificial muscle architectures.

A modified Chromium 10x droplet-based protocol that subsamples cells for both short-read and long-read (nanopore) sequencing together with a new computational pipeline (FLAMES) is developed to enable isoform discovery, splicing analysis, and mutation detection in single cells. We identify thousands of unannotated isoforms and find conserved functional modules that are enriched for alternative transcript usage in different cell types and species, including ribosome biogenesis and mRNA splicing. Analysis at the transcript level allows data integration with scATAC-seq on individual promoters, improved correlation with protein expression data, and linked mutations known to confer drug resistance to transcriptome heterogeneity.

We present a benchmark comparison of several deep learning models including Convolutional Neural Networks, Recurrent Neural Network and Bi-directional Long Short Term Memory, assessed based on various word embedding approaches, including the Bi-directional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and its variants, FastText and Word2Vec. Data augmentation was administered using the Easy Data Augmentation approach resulting in two datasets (original versus augmented). All the models were assessed in two setups, namely 5-class versus 3-class (i.

Background: Laparoscopic-assisted surgery for rectal cancer is widely used, however the healthcare costs are thought to be higher than for open resection. This secondary endpoint analysis of a randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate total healthcare costs of laparoscopic-assisted surgery compared with open resection for rectal cancer over a 12-month period.

Methods: Patients in the Australasian Laparoscopic Cancer of the Rectum Trial (ALaCaRT) were included in a prospective costing analysis.

Model light-confining Tamm plasmon cavities based on gold-coated nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals (TMM-NAA-PCs) with spectrally tunable resonance bands were engineered. Laplacian and Lorentzian NAA-PCs produced by a modified Gaussian-like pulse anodization approach showed well-resolved, high-quality photonic stopbands, the position of which was precisely controlled across the visible spectrum by the periodicity in the input anodization profile. These PC structures were used as a platform material to develop highly reflective distributed Bragg mirrors, the top sides of which were coated with a thin gold film.

Introduction: The Australian Gold Coast Integrated Care programme trialled a model of care targeting those with chronic and complex conditions at highest risk of hospitalisation with the goal of producing the best patient outcomes at no additional cost to the healthcare system. This paper reports the economic findings of the trial.

Methods: A pragmatic non-randomised controlled study assessed differences between patients enrolled in the programme (intervention group) and patients who received usual care (control group), in health service utilisation, including Medicare Benefits Schedule and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme claims, patient-reported outcome measures, including health-related quality of life, mortality risk, and cost.

Background: The small-area deprivation indices are varied across countries due to different social context and data availability. Due to lack of chronic disease-related social deprivation index (SDI) in Hong Kong, China, this study aimed to develop a new SDI and examine its association with cancer mortality.

Methods: A total of 14 socio-economic variables of 154 large Tertiary Planning Unit groups (LTPUGs) in Hong Kong were obtained from 2016 population by-census.

Background: Parental smoking strongly influences adolescent smoking, yet few studies have examined factors that may protect against this. We investigated whether skills-based components of positive mental health ('mental health competence', MHC) modified the association between parental and teenager smoking, in the UK-representative Millennium Cohort Study (approximately 18 000 children, born 2000-02; analytic sample: n = 10 133).

Methods: Cohort members (CMs) reported at 14 years (y) whether they had ever smoked cigarettes.
