Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by an insatiable appetite, leading to chronic overeating and obesity. Additional features include short stature, intellectual disability, behavioral problems and incomplete sexual development. Although significant progress has been made in understanding the genetic basis of PWS, the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of the disorder remain poorly understood.

Background: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are a collection of disorders resulting from fetal ethanol exposure, which causes a wide range of physical, neurological and behavioral deficits including heightened susceptibility for alcoholism and addictive disorders. While a number of mechanisms have been proposed for how ethanol exposure disrupts brain development, with selective groups of neurons undergoing reduced proliferation, dysfunction and death, the induction of a new neurotransmitter phenotype by ethanol exposure has not yet been reported.

Principal Findings: The effects of embryonic and larval ethanol exposure on brain development were visually monitored using transgenic zebrafish expressing cell-specific green fluorescent protein (GFP) marker genes.

Two cases of retroperitoneal duodenum rupture following an upper abdominal blunt trauma are reported. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrates at best extraintestinal fluid and air in the retroperitoneum, especially if acquisition in right lateral decubitus is possible. Drawbacks of the method are also reviewed.

Hypnosis and acupuncture can alleviate experimentally induced pain but the mechanism of analgesia remains unclear for both techniques. Experimental pain was induced by cold pressor test (CPT) in 8 male volunteers. Analgesic effect of hypnosis (HA) and acupuncture (AA) was assessed before and after double-blind administration of placebo or naloxone, in a prospective, cross-over study.

Outpatient surgical proctology is nowadays more and more frequently performed. Between 1986 and 1989, 65% of 1149 anal surgical procedures were performed in our institution on an outpatient basis. The various criteria used to select patients fit for ambulatory surgery seemed adequate, as no complications were observed and no patient required secondary hospitalization.
