In view of the extensive increase of flexible devices and wearable electronics, the development of polymer micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) is becoming more and more important since their potential to meet the multiple needs for sensing applications in flexible electronics is now clearly established. Nevertheless, polymer micromachining for MEMS applications is not yet as mature as its silicon counterpart, and innovative microfabrication techniques are still expected. We show in the present work an emerging and versatile microfabrication method to produce arbitrary organic, spatially resolved micro-structures, starting from dilute inks, and with possibly a large choice of materials.

Background: In 2006, a local collective combating homelessness set up an 'experimental squat' in an abandoned building in Marseille, France's second largest city. They envisioned the squat as an alternative to conventional health and social services for individuals experiencing long-term homelessness and severe psychiatric disorders. Building on what they learned from the squat, some then joined a larger coalition that succeeded in convincing national government decision-makers to develop a scientific, intervention-based programme based on the Housing First model.

This paper is a qualitative analysis of the effects of , a support framework, on recovery trajectories of people with long-term homelessness and severe psychiatric disorders during 24 months in a Housing First-type program in France. A comprehensive methodology based on grounded theory was used to construct an interview guide, conduct multiple interviews with 35 Housing First participants sampled for heterogeneity, and produce memos on their trajectories before and after entering the program based on interview information. Thematic analysis of a representative subsample ( = 13) of memos identified 12 objective factors and 6 subjective factors key to the recovery process.

Recovery model, as the hearing voices movement, promotes the users discourse among the health workers. This interference of users in the expertise considering the meaning of their voices is faced with the vision of advocating health workers, particularly the psychiatrists supporting the psychiatric users movement. On the field, this association seems challenging.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study introduces a new microfluidic method that combines pervaporation and Quake valves to create microscale materials (about 10 × 100 μm(2) × 1 cm) with varying compositions along their length.
  • - The technique uses a thin PDMS membrane to concentrate solutes or particles by pumping solutions from different reservoirs into a microfluidic channel, enabling the gradual formation of dense materials.
  • - The research demonstrates the ability to fabricate nanomaterials and polymer composites with controlled spatial gradients, achieving clear patterns with a resolution of approximately 50 μm for colloidal materials and 1 mm for polymers due to diffusion.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the process of concentrating aqueous polymer solutions within microfluidic channels through water evaporation, leading to the formation of dense polymer material.
  • The researchers utilized theoretical models and experiments to predict the dynamics of polymer growth, factoring in soft channel deformations and the chemical activity of the polymer solution.
  • The findings provide a framework for designing micro-fabricated materials, which can inform the engineering of polymer-based micro-devices by optimizing parameters such as shape, dimensions, and fabrication time.

Background: Recent studies in North American contexts have suggested that the Housing First model is a promising strategy for providing effective services to homeless people with mental illness. In the context of the highly generous French national health and social care system, which is easily accessible and does not require out-of-pocket payment, the French Health Ministry insists on rigorous techniques, including randomized protocols, to evaluate the impact of Housing First approaches in France.

Method And Design: A prospective randomized trial was designed to assess the impact of a Housing First intervention on health outcomes and costs over a period of 24 months on homeless people with severe mental illness, compared to Treatment-As-Usual.

Nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae is a key factor in the development of invasive disease and the spread of resistant strains within the community. A single nasopharyngeal swab was obtained from 648 unvaccinated children aged <5 years, either healthy or with acute respiratory tract infection or meningitis, during the winters of 2000 and 2001. The overall pneumococcal carriage rate was 35.

Objective: To assess the impact of the Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) conjugate vaccine in reducing the incidence of meningitis among children under five years old.

Methods: A 'before-after' design was used to compare Hib meningitis incidence rates in the pre-vaccine (July 1995 - June 1999) and post-vaccine (July 1999 - June 2001) periods in the state of Goias, central Brazil. Bacterial meningitis case definition was based on World Health Organization criteria.

We present a case of invasive pneumococcal infection in a healthy 10-month-old infant from whom Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 23F was isolated from the blood and serotype 23B was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid. Both serotypes were penicillin nonsusceptible. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis demonstrated that the two serotypes had distinct DNA patterns, indicating that infection did not occur as a result of capsular transformation but as a result of a mixed infection with two distinct pneumococcal serotypes.

Acute bacterial meningitis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality among children less than five years old, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis being the most important agents of bacterial meningitis in developing countries. The development of the conjugate vaccines in the beginning of the 90's, especially type b H. influenzae (Hib), and more recently the heptavalent pneumococcal and the serogroup C meningococcal vaccines, have contributed directly to changes in the epidemiological profile of these invasive diseases (direct effect) and of their carriage status (indirect effect).

The molecular epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from carriage and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concurrently recovered from the same individual has not yet been reported. By using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, we demonstrated the genetic linkage among strains from CSF and nasopharynges of two children with pneumococcal meningitis.
