Background: Comprehensive approaches using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Checklist have been adopted to give more visibility to demands related to specific health situations.

Objective: To analyze the incapacity and functioning associated with activity/participation and environmental factors of female workers with repetitive strain injury/work-related musculoskeletal disorders (RSI/WRMSDs) using workers' narratives, ICF codes and the RSI/WRMSDs Checklist developed as a part of the present research project.

Methods: A qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with 15 female workers diagnosed with RSI/WRMSDs was completed.

This research aimed to investigate the factors that affect the return to work of individuals with traumatic paraplegia and to characterize post-injury work by means of a cross-sectional epidemiological study without statistical inference. The participants were patients at the Spinal Cord Injury Program of the Sarah Rehabilitation Hospital, Salvador, Brazil. The descriptive analysis used mean and standard deviation for continuous variables and proportions for categorical variables.

The relationship between voice handicap and professional vocal effort was investigated among teachers in a cross-sectional study of census nature on 4496 teachers within the public elementary education network in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Voice handicap (the outcome of interest) was evaluated using the Voice Handicap Index 10. The main exposure, the lifetime vocal effort index, was obtained as the product of the number of years working as a teacher multiplied by the mean weekly working hours.

Objective: To investigate the association between effort-reward imbalance and depressive symptoms among workers in high voltage power lines.

Methods: A cross-sectional study among 158 workers from an electric power company in Northeast Brazil. The main independent variables were the Effort-Reward Imbalance Model (ERI) dimensions and the main dependent variable was the prevalence of depression, as measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale.

Objective: To analyze factors associated with the prevalence of the medical diagnosis of vocal fold pathologies in teachers.

Methods: A census-based epidemiological, cross-sectional study was conducted with 4,495 public primary and secondary school teachers in the city of Salvador, Northeastern Brazil, between March and April 2006. The dependent variable was the self-reported medical diagnosis of vocal fold pathologies and the independent variables were sociodemographic characteristics; professional activity; work organization/interpersonal relationships; physical work environment characteristics; frequency of common mental disorders, measured by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20 >7); and general health conditions.
