Objective: Among adolescents with type 1 diabetes, research has found that their perception of their diabetes management is an important predictor of actual diabetes management. There is a need for measures that assess adolescents' perception of their ability to independently complete daily diabetes self-care tasks. The current study examined the psychometric properties of the Diabetes Skills Checklist Teen-Report (DSC-T) and DSC Parent of Teen-Report (DSC-PT), which assess perceived independence in diabetes self-care skills.

This article offers a systematic review of the literature on psychosocial aspects of technology use in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their families, searching for relevant articles published the past 5 years. Topics included continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, continuous glucose monitoring, predictive low-glucose suspend, and artificial pancreas systems. The review indicates there are positive and negative psychosocial aspects to diabetes technology use among youth and their families.

"It's safe to ask": promoting patient safety through health literacy.

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety launched "It's Safe to Ask" in January 2007. The communication and health literacy initiative is aimed at Manitoba's vulnerable populations and their primary care providers. Phase 1 includes a poster and brochure for patients and a toolkit for providers/organizations, pilot tested in six sites in Manitoba.

Language use in females with fragile X or Turner syndrome during brief initial social interactions.

Fragile X and Turner syndromes are associated with risk of atypical social function. We examined language use, including normal and atypical speech, during initial social interactions among participants engaged in a brief social role play with an unfamiliar adult. There were 27 participants with Turner syndrome, 20 with fragile X syndrome and 28 in an age-matched comparison group.

Structure of a hydrophilic-hydrophobic block copolymer and its interactions with salt and an anionic surfactant.

The aggregation of a hydrophilic-hydrophobic diblock copolymer consisting of poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in aqueous solution has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering. This polybase is extensively protonated at low pH and forms micelles with a dense core of PMMA and a diffuse coronal layer of cationic PDMAEMA. This study was designed to examine factors associated with literal interpretations of homonyms. Participants were 212 second graders, ages 7;0-8;11, who listened to a story containing 16 key words. The key words were homonymous words ('pseudo-homonyms'), nonsense words, or familiar words used accurately.
