This article examines the instructional research literature pertinent to teaching procedures or information to individuals with acquired memory impairments due to brain injury or related conditions. The purpose is to evaluate the available evidence in order to generate practice guidelines for clinicians working in the field of cognitive rehabilitation. A systematic review of the instructional literature from 1986 to 2006 revealed 51 studies meeting search criteria.

This paper reports the results of an exploratory study into the usability of a simplified e-mail interface for eight individuals with acquired cognitive-linguistic impairments. Participatory Action Research, a qualitative research method, was used to capture the range of performance variables and to emphasize a 'user-centred' approach to the research process. The participants were asked to read and reply to e-mails across four writing prompt conditions.
