Lipoid Proteinosis: A Rare Cause of Hoarseness.

Lipoid proteinosis is a rare cause of voice problems. Hoarseness is often the first clinical manifestation of this disorder and can present years before any other symptom. Therefore, it is very important as an otorhinolaryngologist to be familiar with the main characteristics of this disease.

Grommet and adenoid pain evaluation (GRAPE) study.

In the GRAPE study an analysis is made of postoperative pain sensation in children between 6 months and 6 years after adenotomy and placement of ear grommets. Intraoperative treatment with paracetamol versus placebo shows no statistically significant difference in pain between both groups indicating that this type of surgery causes little discomfort and does not require specific intraoperative analgesic treatment.

Laryngeal Manifestations of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Background: Laryngeal involvement in inflammatory bowel disease is rare. Only 12 cases of laryngeal involvement in Crohn disease have been reported until now. Moreover, only one case of laryngeal manifestations in ulcerative colitis has been reported so far.

Quantifying the cepstral peak prominence, a measure of dysphonia.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to establish normative values for the smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) and its sensitivity and specificity as a measure of dysphonia.

Study Design: Prospective cohort study.

Methods: Voice samples of running speech were obtained from 835 patients and 50 volunteers.

Epidemiology of ENT emergencies.

Objective: To give an overview of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) pathologies encountered in the emergency room (ER).

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 1296 files of patients visiting the ER between January 2008 and December 2012. Diagnosis, treatment, hospitalisation, referral, and demographic parameters were evaluated.

Physiology of the mouth and pharynx, Waldeyer's ring, taste and smell.

This paper reviews the contribution of the different parts of the oral cavity and the pharynx to the basic physiology of breathing, phonation, speech, swallowing, and of Waldeyer's ring to the functioning of the immune system. We discuss the development of taste and smell, as well as possibilities for chemosensory testing in children.

Outpatient hemithyroidectomy: safety and feasibility.

Objective: In Belgium, thyroidectomy is currently an inpatient procedure because of potential life-threatening post-operative complications that include hypocalcemia, laryngeal nerve damage and haemorrhage. Thyroidectomy can only be performed on an outpatient basis if the complication rate is low. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and safety of outpatient hemithyroidectomy.

Tonsillectomy as a day-case surgery: a safe procedure?

Unlabelled: PROBLEM/OBJECTIVES: To assess the safety of tonsillectomy as a one-day procedure, we retrospectively evaluated complications of tonsillectomy within two weeks after surgery.

Methodology: The study included 1977 patients; 85% of the tonsillectomies were performed as a one-day procedure. Tonsillectomies were performed in Ziekenhuis Oost Limburg by one staff ENT and seven ENT residents between January 1, 1996 and January 1, 2005.
