This case report describes a patient with a medical history of schizophrenia, found in a coma with hyperthermia, likely due to classic heatstroke. The white blood cells observed on the blood smear showed cytological abnormalities characterized by multilobed nuclei, which could be early signs of cell death. The evolution into multiorgan failure led rapidly to death.

Purpose: Bacterial isolation is associated with worse outcomes after lung transplantation (LTx), and successful bacterial eradication is shown to improve long-term survival and pulmonary function. Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) may be an effective therapeutic modality for bacterial eradication post-LTx.

Methods: A single-center, retrospective analysis of OPAT characteristics, efficacy, safety, and costs in non-cystic fibrosis LTx recipients.

Objectives: Vibrio cholerae non-O1/non-O139 (NOVC) bacteremia is infrequently reported in Western countries and is associated with unfavorable outcome.

Patient/method: We describe here the case of a diabetic patient with hepatic cytolysis and NOVC bacteremia following an episode of diarrhea.

Result: The patient was paucisymptomatic and had a favorable resolution with oral ciprofloxacin.

The viral genome titre is universally used for the dosing of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based vectors used for gene therapy. To standardise this determination, the development of a common method would be valuable to facilitate comparison of viral doses used in the clinic and in the subsequent quality control of the products. A collaborative study was initiated by the Gene Therapy Working Group of the General European Official Medicines Control Laboratories Network in order to validate a qPCR-based method targeting the ITR2 sequence common to a broad variety of AAV vectors, independently from the serotype of the capsid or from the specific transgene.

Bronchial stenosis is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening complication of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). The development of lower respiratory tract stenoses in patients with GPA is thought to be the result of persistent inflammation of the cartilaginous tissue. New assessment methods for this severe GPA complication are highly needed.

Aim: To study the prognostic value of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in patients with vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS).

Material And Methods: Thirty-four patients with VS/UWS underwent multi-voxel MRS (thalamus, globus pallidus, putamen, internal capsules, fornix, brainstem, temporal and frontal cortex). Subjects were grouped according to etiology: 22 patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) (group 1) and 12 patients with a hypoxia (group 2).

Purpose: To evaluate whether PET/CT could be used to assess the extent of colorectal peritoneal metastases.

Methods: All patients who underwent a PET/CT scan before a CRS-HIPEC procedure between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2013 were retrospectively included (n = 35). Two nuclear medicine physicians (observer 1 and observer 2) separately reviewed the scans on intraperitoneal abnormalities.

A 56-year-old man who was recently diagnosed with a carcinoid tumor of the os petrosum was referred for a Ga-DOTA-TOC PET/CT scan. Besides the moderately increased Ga-DOTA-TOC accumulation in the carcinoid tumor, the scan showed strongly increased and focal Ga-DOTA-TOC uptake in an additional lesion in the right parotid gland. The markedly different Ga-DOTA-TOC avidity suggested a different etiology, and histological examination demonstrated a pleomorphic adenoma.

A 62-year-old man with recently diagnosed prostatic adenocarcinoma was referred for a whole-body Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT scan for staging. Although the scan did not reveal metastatic disease, it did reveal a PSMA-avid lesion in the upper abdomen located between the liver and the stomach. Histopathologic examination demonstrated a gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

A 42-year-old man with a medical history of liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension was admitted to the hospital because of slowly progressive shortness of breath and hypoxemia. The diagnosis hepatopulmonary syndrome was confirmed by a pulmonary perfusion scan with 99m Tc-albumin. The scan showed a right-left shunt, because the 99m Tc-albumin transited the lungs and appeared in the brain, the thyroid gland, the kidneys and the spleen.

Objective: To investigate if the duration of pre-dialysis nephrology care is a predictive factor for mortality and morbidity in the first year of renal replacement therapy (RRT).

Design: Cohort study.

Method: We included all patients with chronic or acute-on-chronic renal failure whose estimated glomerular filtration time (eGFR) was < 30 ml/min/1.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the Western world. Most colorectal cancers show fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake, although in mucinous adenocarcinoma uptake may be limited. A literature search was conducted regarding the impact of FDG-PET/computed tomography (CT) on management and outcome in patients with colorectal carcinoma.

The present study examined in the rat the effect of a partial lesion of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway induced by intrastriatal injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), on the dopaminergic innervation of the cortex and the globus pallidus as revealed using tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunoreactivity. Twenty-eight days after unilateral injection of 6-OHDA into the dorsal part of the striatum, TH-positive fiber density was reduced by 41% in the dorsal and central part of the structure, and was accompanied by a retrograde loss of 33% of TH-positive neurons in the substantia nigra (SN), while the ventral tegmental area was completely spared. In the SN, TH-positive cell loss was most severe in the ventral part of the structure (-55%).

The authors analyzed a neglected phenomenon: self-conversion. Rather than concentrating on the influence exerted by a confederate on a naive participant, the authors studied how the confederate is himself or herself influenced by the position that he or she defends at the request of the experimenter. This experiment is particularly revealing with respect to a fundamental aspect of the psychology of the proselytizing of minority groups: In the process of convincing others, one also convinces oneself.
