Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the differences in growth rates and metabolic effects of two types of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) tumors identified on CT scans: high delta (aggressive) and low delta (less aggressive).
  • Researchers analyzed CT scans from 55 patients who developed PDAC as a second cancer, assessing tumor growth kinetics using a Gompertz function and recording changes in body fat and blood glucose levels.
  • Results showed that low delta tumors grew significantly slower than high delta tumors, with growth-rate constants of 0.024 month versus 0.088 month and longer initiation times (14 years vs. 5 years), indicating potential for different clinical outcomes.

Previously, we characterized qualitative imaging-based subtypes of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) on computed tomography (CT) scans. Conspicuous (high delta) PDAC tumors are more likely to have aggressive biology and poorer clinical outcomes compared to inconspicuous (low delta) tumors. Here, we developed a quantitative classification of this imaging-based subtype (quantitative delta; q-delta).
