Millions of pharmaceuticals are prescribed each year. Wastewater treatment plants fail to remove all pharmaceuticals from discharge leading to detectable concentrations entering aquatic ecosystems where the compounds can encounter nontarget organisms. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of antidepressants interact with transporters in the brain and peripheral nervous system to change serotonin levels in the synapse.
