Aqueous solutions of zirconium and hafnium (M) halides (X) with atomic ratios α = X/M near 1 form glasses on evaporation. Herein, we describe the preparation and properties of these glasses and discuss the nature of the crystal-glass equilibria beyond the pure glass compositions. Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) studies reveal increased polymerization as α decreases from 2 to 1.

Peroxide ligation of aqueous metal-oxo clusters provides rich speciation and structural diversity, radiation sensitivity for manipulation with light, and both broadens and shifts pH-range stability. Here we demonstrate peroxide ligation of the polyoxometalate (POM) [TaO]. We study in detail solution speciation of the peroxide-substituted cluster, and benchmark it to the peroxide-ligated niobate analogue, [NbO(OH)(O)], whose solid-state structure has been reported.

The study of the aggregation of small molecules in solution induced by metallophilic interactions has been traditionally performed by spectroscopic methods through identification of chemical changes in the system. Herein we demonstrate the use of SAXS (small-angle X-ray scattering) to identify structures in solution, taking advantage of the excellent scattering intensity of heavy metals which have undergone association by metallophilic interactions. An analysis of the close relationship between solid-state and solution arrangements of a dynamic [Ag2 (bisNHC)2 ](2+) (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) system, and how they are complementary to each other, is reported.

This Perspective article highlights some of the traditional and non-traditional analytical tools that are presently used to characterize aqueous inorganic nanoscale clusters and polyoxometalate ions. The techniques discussed in this article include nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), dynamic and phase analysis light scattering (DLS and PALS), Raman spectroscopy, and quantum mechanical computations (QMC). For each method we briefly describe how it functions and illustrate how these techniques are used to study cluster species in the solid state and in solution through several representative case studies.

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies of aqueous [Ta6O19](8-) compared to prior studies of aqueous [Nb6O19](8-) reveals key differences in behaviour, which is likely at the root of the difficultly in developing polyoxotantalate chemistry. Specifically, where contact ion-pairing dominates between [Nb6O19](8-) and its counterions, solvent-separated ion-pairing between [Ta6O19](8-) and its counterions has been unveiled in the current study.
