Article Synopsis
  • Researchers introduce a new all-optical discrete multilevel time-lens (DM-TL) design using cross-phase modulation (XPM), which allows for efficient control over light pulses.
  • The innovative design significantly reduces the needed pump power compared to traditional methods that use a parabolic pump, applying quadratic phase modulation to time-bins of constant levels.
  • The DM-TL successfully converts continuous-wave signals into pulse trains, achieving up to 12 times gain at repeat rates over 16 GHz, showcasing substantial power savings as conversion gains increase.

In this work we report a novel intensity-based technique for simultaneous high-speed and high-resolution interrogation of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The method uses a couple of intensity Gaussian filters and the dispersion-induced wavelength-to-time mapping effect. The Bragg wavelength is retrieved by means of the amplitude comparison between the two filtered grating spectrums, which are mapped into a time-domain waveform.

To plan a rapid response and minimize operational costs, passive optical network operators require to automatically detect and identify faults that may occur in the optical distribution network. In this work, we present DSP-Enhanced OTDR, a novel methodology for remote fault analysis based on conventional optical time-domain reflectometry complemented with reference traces and DSP-based techniques. We first obtain the optimal decision thresholds to detect deviations in the noisy OTDR measurement.
