The simultaneous separation of the enantiomers of six anticoagulant rodenticides, derived from 4-hydroxycoumarin, has been studied in this work. Ten different stationary phases (zwitterionic, Pirkle-type, polysaccharides and macrocyclic antibiotics derivatives) were evaluated by using supercritical fluid chromatography coupled to two different detectors (circular dichroism and mass spectrometry-single quadrupole). The effect of the type of organic modifier and temperature on the chiral separation was investigated, and the best results were obtained with the column Regis S,S-Whelk-O1 at 25 °C when using a gradient elution program with methanol as organic modifier.

In the last decade, the instrumentation improvements in supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and the hyphenation to mass spectrometry (MS), have increased the SFC acceptance between scientists, becoming today a valuable tool in analytical chemistry. The unique selectivity, short analysis times, low consumption of organic solvents, and the greener mobile phase, have contributed to expanding its applicability which has led to an increase in the number of publications especially in the bioanalysis area. This work reviews the advantages and main applications of SFC in bioanalysis during the last 5 years.

Urolithins are gut microbiota metabolites produced in humans after consuming foods containing ellagitannins and ellagic acid. Three urolithin metabotypes have been reported for different individuals depending on the final urolithins produced. After absorption, they are conjugated with glucuronic acid (phase II metabolism), and these are the main circulating metabolites in plasma and reach different tissues.

The separation of ten flavanones (flavanone, 2'-hydroxyflavanone, 4'-hydroxyflavanone, 6-hydroxyflavanone, 7-hydroxyflavanone, naringenin, naringin, hesperetin, pinostrobin, and taxifolin) using supercritical fluid chromatography and considering achiral and chiral approaches has been studied in this work. For this purpose, different stationary phases and organic modifiers have been checked. Considering the achiral separation, the best results were obtained with the Lichrospher 100 Diol column at 35 °C, 3 mL/min, 150 bar and a gradient of 2-propanol from 5% to 50%.

Infectious keratitis is a serious ocular infection that can lead to loss of vision. The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiological characteristics of this infection at the University Hospital of Guadalajara (Spain). We retrospectively reviewed all cases diagnosed between January 2010 and December 2016.

Two new polymer-based stationary phases; DCpak PBT (poly(butylene terephthalate)) and DCpak P4VP (poly(4-vinylpirydine)) were evaluated for the analysis of polyphenols using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The compounds studied included phenolic acids and flavonoids. The different variables that influence the chromatographic separation, such as type and percentage of organic modifier, additive, pressure and temperature were examined.

In this study, a new method has been developed to determine flubendiamide in honey using liquid chromatography coupled to a selective mass spectrometry detector (quadrupole-time-of-flight). An efficient sample treatment involving a solid phase extraction with a C sorbent was proposed (average analyte recoveries were between 94 and 104%). Chromatographic analysis (9min) was performed on a C column (Gemini C, 50×2.

In the last years, supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has increased its acceptance between scientists. The unique selectivity, short analysis times, low consumption of organic solvents as well as the improvements in instrumentation have contributed to expand its use. These characteristics make SFC a powerful tool when food analysis requires individualized evaluation of several compounds in very complex samples.

A method to separate FAME and the linoleic and linolenic acids isomers by GCxGC using an apparatus equipped with a capillary flow technology (CFT) based modulator and a FID detector has been developed. Four different column combinations (one conventional and three inverted phase sets) were used in these experiments. The conventional set first involved a DB5-MS non-polar column followed by a highly polar HP-INNOWax column in the second dimension.

The semipreparative chiral separation of lansoprazole and two related compounds (pantoprazole and rabeprazole) using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is presented in this work. Different loads were evaluated in order to obtain high enantiomeric purities and production rates. The volumes injected were 1, 2 and 4 mL.

The likely presence in wine of residues of the active ingredient and its degradation products, besides the byproducts and excipients of the commercial formulation, has been investigated for four pesticides. Formulations containing chlorpyriphos-methyl, methiocarb, dicofol, and cyproconazol were added to must, which was subjected to a usual vinification. The wines elaborated from must spiked with the formulation of chlorpyriphos-methyl contained two pyridinol compounds in addition to excipients such as alkylbenzenes, naphthalene, and methylnaphthalenes.

The chiral resolution of four antifungal compounds, three imidazoles (miconazole, econazole and sulconazole) and one triazole (itraconazole) using supercritical fluid chromatography on the amylose-based chiral stationary phase Chiralpak AD, is presented in this work. The influence of pressure, type and percentage of organic modifier and temperature on retention times and resolution was studied. The enantiomeric separation of the three imidazoles was achieved with resolutions higher than two and analysis times lower than 10 min, obtaining the best results using methanol as modifier.

The enantiomeric separation of bifonazole by supercritical fluid chromatography on Chiralpak AD has been studied. The effect of different modifiers (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, and acetonitrile) was examined. Enantioseparation was possible with all of them, but the best results were provided by the alcohol-type ones.

The application of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) to the enantiomeric separation of several chiral sulfoxides belonging to the family of the substituted benzimidazoles, including omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, oxfendazole and ricobendazole, is presented in this work. The column employed was Chiralpak AD and the effect of different chromatographic conditions was studied. The results obtained showed that all the compounds can be enantiomerically resolved using SFC, with resolutions higher than 2 and analysis times that in most cases were lower than 10 min.

A study of the viability of three derivatizing reagents for obtaining amino acid profiles in honey through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is presented. A method using diode array detection based on a reaction with diethyl ethoxymethylene malonate (DEMM) and two other methods using fluorescence detection based on derivatization with fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC-Cl) and 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate (AQC) have been developed. The three methods yield detection limits close to the ppb level, but vary in relation to other analytical characteristics.

A study of the real possibilities of carbohydrate profiles and chemometrics to characterize the botanical origin of honey from a single geographical area, the Province of Soria (Spain), is presented. To this end, 14 carbohydrates were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) in 77 natural honeys, the botanical origins of which were ling, spike lavender, French lavender, thyme, forest, and multifloral. Principal component analysis has been employed as a first approach to characterize the honey samples analyzed, showing similarities between spike lavender and multifloral honeys.

The presence of degradation products of bromopropylate, trichlorphon, parathion-methyl and tebuconazole in white and red wines elaborated from musts spiked with commercial formulations of the pesticides was studied. Must and wine were subjected to solid-phase extraction followed by gas chromatography with electron ionization mass spectrometric detection. Alpha-bromophenylphenylmethanol, aminoparathion, acetylaminoparathion-oxon and dichlorvos have been identified as degradation products of bromopropylate, parathion-methyl and trichlorphon in wines, respectively.
