The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a cosmopolitan migratory, seasonal mysticete that frequents the Brazilian coast. Strands of specimens may occur during the migratory stay in the country. In 2021 and 2022, three live humpback whales stranded on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states in southern Brazil.

[Evaluation of the behavioral program in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a randomized clinical trial].

The scope of this article was to evaluate the effect of the behavioral group education program and telephone intervention in modifying psychological attitudes, enhancing empowerment, and self-care practices aimed at improving clinical control in type 2 diabetes mellitus. It involved a randomized cluster clinical trial, carried out with 199 people with diabetes. In order to perform intragroup comparisons (final and initial phases) and between groups with respect to the indices of the psychological attitude, empowerment, self-care and glycated hemoglobin level variables, the Generalizing Estimating Equation (GEE) approach was used.

Additionally, predictors of perceptions of (in)security and gender differences were also examined. The participants were 775 students and data were collected through the "Diagnosis of Local Security Questionnaire".

Evidence for ecological processes driving speciation among endemic lizards of Madagascar.

Although genetic patterns produced by population isolation during speciation are well documented, the biogeographic and ecological processes that trigger speciation remain poorly understood. Alternative hypotheses for the biogeography and ecology of speciation include geographic isolation combined with niche conservation (soft allopatry) or parapatric distribution on an environmental gradient with niche divergence (ecological speciation). Here, we use species' distributions, environmental data, and two null models (the Random Translation and Rotation and the Background Similarity Test) to test these alternative hypotheses among 28 sister pairs of microendemic lizards in Madagascar.

This article describes a curated dataset entitled "Looking at Crime: Communities and Physical Spaces", which comprises data from different sources, namely Diagnosis of Local Security (DLS), Diagnosis of School Environment (DSE) and observation of physical spaces. However, natural contaminants, such as mycotoxins and trace elements can accumulate in aromatic herbs, which may have serious food safety and public health implications. In this study, the presence of mycotoxins, as well as the content of trace elements was evaluated in herbs and herbal infusions commercialized in Brazil.

The price of conserving avian phylogenetic diversity: a global prioritization approach.

The combination of rapid biodiversity loss and limited funds available for conservation represents a major global concern. While there are many approaches for conservation prioritization, few are framed as financial optimization problems. We use recently published avian data to conduct a global analysis of the financial resources required to conserve different quantities of phylogenetic diversity (PD).
