Article Synopsis
  • Myeloproliferative neoplasms are disorders involving stem cells, where chronic inflammation plays a significant role in complications like blood clots, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is becoming a potential prognostic tool for assessing these conditions.
  • A study of 473 patients with essential thrombocythemia showed that a high NLR at diagnosis (≥4) increased the risk of both arterial and venous thrombotic events, alongside other factors such as diabetes and hypertension.
  • The NLR is an accessible inflammatory marker that could be used alongside traditional cardiovascular risk assessments to identify patients at higher risk for thrombosis in essential thrombocythemia.

COVID-19 has a negative impact on the survival of respiratory patients, especially those with interstitial lung disease. This review aims to better understand the effect of COVID-19 on patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). A systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus performed from December 2019 up to July 2024 identified relevant studies.

Excess weight and high waist circumference (WC) are associated with increased blood pressure (BP), starting from the pediatric age. Insulin resistance is associated with elevated BP in childhood. The aim of the study was to assess the role of insulin resistance in mediating the relationship between body mass index (BMI), WC, and BP values in a pediatric population referred to a cardio-pediatric center for the presence of one or more cardiovascular risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA), particularly biosimilars (B-ESA), show promise in treating anemia in myelofibrosis (MF), although their effectiveness is not fully established.
  • A study of 96 MF patients indicated an 80% anemia response rate with B-ESA, where important factors for response included being transfusion-independent and having low ferritin levels at the start of treatment.
  • The treatment was generally well-tolerated, with only 2.5% discontinuing due to toxicity, and those who responded to B-ESA had better survival rates compared to non-responders, suggesting the need for further research on its clinical benefits.

Several studies describe the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and arterial stiffness in adults. Uric acid contributes through several mechanisms to the increase in blood pressure (BP) and adversely affects the insulin signaling pathway. Moreover, SUA predict the development of hypertension and insulin resistance up to type 2 diabetes.

Objective: To describe the Emoty-Com training, its impact on medical students' attitudes towards doctors' emotions and to explore the association between students' empathy, emotional intelligence (EI), and attachment style (AS) with post-training performance scores.

Methods: The 16-hour Emoty-Com training was delivered to all second-year medical students of Verona and Milan (Italy) Universities. At pre-training, students filled out three questionnaires assessing empathy, AS and EI and responded to three questions on attitudes towards doctors' emotions in the doctor-patient encounter.

Background: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a motor disorder of unknown aetiology that may have long-term consequences on daily activities, and psychological and physical health. Studies investigating risk factors for DCD have so far provided inconsistent results.

Objectives: To assess, using a parent-report screening tool, risk of DCD in school-age very preterm children born in Italy, and investigate the associated early biomedical and sociodemographic factors.

Objective: To explore the association of emotional intelligence (EI) and attachment security (AS) with empathy dimensions in medical students by examining the mediating role of EI.

Methods: In a cross-sectional design, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), and demographic questions were administrated to second-year medical students of two medical schools in Northern Italy.

Results: 253 medical students (56.
