Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate personality characteristics and clinical parameters in two well-defined epilepsies: mesial temporal lobe epilepsy related to hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE/HS) and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) through NEO Revised Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and Neurobehavior Inventory (NBI) standardized instruments.

Methods: One hundred patients undergoing corticoamygdalohippocampectomy (CAH), 100 patients with JME, and 100 control subjects answered the personality measures. Clinical parameters such as psychiatric symptoms, seizure frequency, duration of epilepsy, and side of the lesion in MTLE/HS group were investigated.

Objective: To apply, in Brazil, the T-cell receptor excision circles (TRECs) quantification technique using real-time polymerase chain reaction in newborn screening for severe combined immunodeficiency and assess the feasibility of implementing it on a large scale in Brazil.

Methods: 8715 newborn blood samples were collected on filter paper and, after DNA elution, TRECs were quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The cutoff value to determine whether a sample was abnormal was determined by ROC curve analysis, using SSPS.

There is also growing evidence of the effects of negative life events on the mental health and behavior of individuals with intellectual disability. Purpose: Studies suggest that higher cognitive functions could precipitate seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). The present study aimed to analyze the effects of higher mental activity on epileptiform discharges and seizures in patients with JME and compare them to those of habitual methods of activation.
