Given the diverse nature of the autism spectrum and the complex, context-dependent nature of Social Functioning (SF), this study aims to delineate profiles of SF in young people with autism. Using a multi-method approach, it aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of social difficulties in people with ASD. This study also examines the co-occurrence of mental health issues within these profiles, which can exacerbate social impairments.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how autism-related traits, especially social difficulties, affect stress levels and cortisol production in autistic adolescents and young adults compared to their nonautistic peers.
  • Researchers found that while the overall cortisol patterns were similar between both groups, autistic individuals had a higher total cortisol output throughout the day.
  • The findings suggest that autistic youth may be more vulnerable to stress-related mental health issues, particularly linked to their social struggles, with autistic females showing notable associations between cortisol changes and mental health symptoms.

Backgrounds: Social skills are frequently impaired in neurodevelopmental disorders and genetic conditions, including 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Although often assessed with questionnaires, direct assessment provides a more valid estimate of the constructs.

Background: Increased reactivity to minor stressors is considered a risk factor for psychosis, especially in vulnerable individuals. In the present study, we investigated affective and psychotic stress reactivity as well as its link with psychotic symptoms and psychopathology in youths with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a neurogenetic condition associated with a high risk for psychosis.

Background: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurogenetic condition associated to a high risk for psychiatric disorders, including psychosis. Individuals with 22q11DS are thought to experience increased levels of chronic stress, which could lead to alterations in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA)-axis functioning.

Social impairments are common features of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) allowed access to daily-life information in order to explore the phenomenology of social interactions.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a genetic condition associated with a markedly increased risk for psychosis. Psychotic experiences are classically evaluated by clinical interviews that give little information about these symptoms' fluctuation in daily-life.

Article Synopsis
  • The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has severely impacted mental health, yet the role of protective factors like resilience remains largely unexplored.
  • A cross-sectional online survey involving nearly 16,000 adults highlighted that a positive appraisal style (PAS) significantly increases resilience, as it helps maintain good mental health despite stressors related to the pandemic.
  • Findings suggest that perceived social support and the ability to recover from stress also contribute to resilience, offering insights for public mental health initiatives to target these modifiable factors.
