The characterization of non-crystalline complexes is particularly difficult when techniques like X-ray diffraction or NMR cannot be used. We propose a simple procedure to characterize the physicochemical properties of amorphous new coordination compounds between cyclodextrins (CD) and Cu(2+) salts, by means of the integration of the information provided by several techniques including elemental analysis, flame atomic absorption, TGA, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance, colorimetry, FT-IR and EPR. On the basis of these procedures, we suggest geometrical and structural approximations resulting in an octahedral or distorted octahedral geometry with diverse positions for the metallic centre.

Tetracycline (TC) derivatives are extensively used as antibiotics in human and animal medicine and, very recently, they have been screened as anti-amyloidogenic drugs. Anhydrotetracycline (AHTC) is one of the major degradation products of TC that has been linked to several side effects of the drug. We evaluated the interaction of AHTC with bovine serum albumin (BSA), one of the main carriers of amphiphilic molecules in blood, using three complementary analytical methods: fluorescence spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry.

The oxidation of aryl methyl sulfides containing electron withdrawing and electron donating groups (p-NO(2), p-CHO, p-NCS, p-Br, H, p-CH(3), p-OCH(3)) was carried out in homogeneous solution in acetonitrile in the presence of catalytic amounts of HNO(3) and FeBr(3). The FeBr(3) is required for the reaction to proceed for compounds with strongly electron withdrawing groups (p-NO(2) and p-CHO) but is not necessary in the case of all the other compounds, although in the latter cases the yield decreases considerably. The rate of the reaction was measured as a function of substrate, FeBr(3) and HNO(3) concentration.
