Among the mechanisms of action of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO), the chance of reducing injury by interfering with the mechanisms of redox homeostasis in the heart leads to the possibility of extending the period of viability of the myocardium at risk. This would benefit late interventions for reperfusion to the ischemic area. The objective of the present study was to investigate the changes in the redox system associated with HBO therapy maintained during the first hour after coronary occlusion in an acute myocardial infarction (MI) rat model.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFeNOS activation resulting in mitochondrial biogenesis is believed to play a central role in life span extension promoted by calorie restriction (CR). We investigated the mechanism of this activation by treating vascular cells with serum from CR rats and found increased Akt and eNOS phosphorylation, in addition to enhanced nitrite release. Inhibiting Akt phosphorylation or immunoprecipitating adiponectin (found in high quantities in CR serum) completely prevented the increment in nitrite release and eNOS activation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFasting hypertriglyceridemia relates with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, but it is not known whether low HDL cholesterol is associated with disturbances of chylomicron metabolism. To clarify this issue this metabolism was studied in subjects with low HDL cholesterol together with vascular reactivity and evaluation of no-flush niacin treatment. Thirty men with HDL < 1.

We investigated the effect of isotretinoin on the plasma kinetics of emulsion models of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and the lipid profile. Ten patients with acne were treated with 0.

Methods: Smooth muscle cells isolated from human aortas cultured and radiolabeled with H-cholesterol were loaded with cholesterol and incubated with increasing concentrations of HDL isolated from 13 CAD patients with low HDL-C (CAD group) or from 5 controls without CAD (C group). Efflux of cellular cholesterol was measured by cellular depletion of radiolabeled cholesterol and by the appearance of H-cholesterol into experimental medium expressed as a percentage of total labeled cholesterol.
We have previously demonstrated that 3-month-old rats submitted to 50% intrauterine food restriction showed a decreased number of nephrons with increased glomerular diameter, a fact that suggests compensatory hypertrophy. In the present study, we extended the investigation and performed serial blood pressure measurements and renal function evaluation in 8- and 12-week-old rats submitted to 50% intrauterine food restriction (groups R8 and R12) and in age-matched control rats (groups C8 and C12). After weaning, six to eight animals from each group received oral supplements of 2% L-arginine ( L-arg) solution for 4 or 8 weeks (groups CA8, CA12, RA8, RA12).

However, the native lipoprotein is difficult to obtain and handle. Previously, we showed that a lipidic emulsion (LDE) similar to the lipid structure of native LDL may bind to LDL receptors and be taken up by acute myelocytic leukemia cells.
