Objectives: Osteoporosis remains underdiagnosed in orthopaedic trauma patients. Recently, protocols have emerged to identify and treat osteoporosis in this population. Our purpose was to compare the usefulness of quantitative ultrasound of calcaneus (QUS) with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for identifying orthopaedic trauma patients at risk for osteoporotic fractures.

Osteoporosis is a metabolic condition that is increasing in prevalence as people live longer. A fracture is a sentinel event. Despite all the advances in technology, a history of low-energy fracture in adulthood is the best predictor of future fracture-an even better predictor than low bone mineral density.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of patients at risk for osteoporosis and fracture in a cohort of orthopaedic trauma patients and to subsequently determine the efficacy of a protocol for evaluation, education, and treatment in these patients.

Design: Prospective study of "osteoporosis protocol" for evaluation, education, initiation of treatment, and 1-year follow-up in orthopaedic trauma patients.

Setting: Level 2 regional trauma center.

Purpose: The study was designed to examine the effect of sports of varying skeletal loading on bone density in adolescent female athletes.

Methods: Bone mineral densities of female swimmers, soccer players, and weight lifters were examined. Between-sport comparisons were made using a one-way analysis of covariance with age and body mass index as covariates and group bone mass density (BMD) was compared to the World Health Organization's (WHO) normative values for adult females.

We compared a novel external suction drainage (ESD) system with a conventional internal suction drainage (ISD) system in patients undergoing primary total hip or knee arthroplasties. Forty-two consecutive patients were studied: 22 who received an ISD system and 20 who received the ESD system. Drainage volume was measured, standardized questionnaires were used to assess patient comfort and response to drain removal, and number of complications were recorded.
