Introduction: In the scenario of chronic osteomyelitis following an ankle fracture, limb salvage and ideally infection eradication, can be an alternative to amputation.Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis is perhaps the most popular procedure. When performing fusion in osteomyelitis patients, external fixation is more commonly used, although there is some experience with internal fixation.

Background: In people living with HIV (PLWH) with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, liver and nonliver-related mortality significantly decreased after receiving direct acting antivirals (DAAs). We aimed to assess main causes and predictors of mortality after sustained virologic response induced by DAAs.
Methods: Retrospective study in antiretroviral treatment-experienced PLWH with HCV infection, followed at San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy, who achieved sustained virologic response after DAAs.
Aim: The current study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PB-MNCs) therapy for patients with ischaemic diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) treated through indirect revascularization.
Methods: The study is a prospective non-controlled observational study including patients with neuro-ischaemic DFUs who received indirect peripheral revascularization and showed a persistence of wound ischaemia defined by the absence of angiographic collateral vessels and TcPO2 values < 30 mmHg in the wound angiosome area. All patients received 3 cycles of PB-MNCs therapy administered along the wound related artery based on the angiosome theory.
Introduction: To assess the effectiveness of novel HIV curative strategies, "cure" trials require periods of closely monitored antiretroviral therapy (ART) analytical treatment interruptions (ATIs). We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the impact of ATI with or without novel therapeutics in cure-related studies on the time to viral re-suppression following ART restart.
Methods: Medline, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched for human studies involving ATIs from 1 January 2015 till 22 April 2024.
Purpose: Evidence indicates the existence of an association between socioeconomic status (SES) and the prevalence of myopia in the adult population. In contrast, there are limited studies investigating this association in children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the presence of myopia in 8-year-old children from southern Europe and SES defined as parental educational level and employment status.

Unlabelled: The Receptor Activator Nuclear of κB Ligand (RANKL) plays an important function in immune responses, activating osteoclast cells and unchanged bone resorption, which in turn leads to bone erosion and inflammation. Genetic variants in the promoter region of the RANKL gene could lead to a higher risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Objective: To assess the association of (-693C>G) and (-643T>C) genetic variants with RA risk.
Retroareolar cysts (RCs) are a benign self-resolving condition primarily affecting pubertal individuals. However, their presentation as asymptomatic bluish areolar lumps remains underreported in the literature, with only six cases previously documented. This lack of awareness may lead to the oversight of RCs during diagnosis.

Personality traits were analyzed in a patient group of 141 patients who showed functional and congenital voice disorders. The results were compared to the control group made up of 99 vocally healthy individuals.

Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) is a synthetic analog of viral double-stranded RNA, a toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) ligand and mimic of viral infection.
Methods: To investigate the functional role of ORMDL3 in the poly I:C-induced inflammatory response in airway epithelial cells, ORMDL3 knockdown and over-expression models were established in human A549 epithelial cells and primary normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells.
Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) infection is associated with neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases in immunocompromised patients. Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a common malignancy reported in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR). Kaposi sarcoma inflammatory cytokine syndrome (KICS), initially described in HIV patients, is characterized by high viral loads, elevated levels of cytokines, cytopenia, high fever, organ failure, and poor outcome.

The presence of PAD is associated with non-healing ulcers, major amputation, cardiovascular morbidity, and mortality. It is estimated that persons with diabetes, foot ulceration and PAD have 50% of 5-years mortality rate.

The amyloid beta-peptide (Aβ) is the low-abundance product of amyloid precursor protein (APP), which is produced lifelong in the healthy brain. The functional properties of Aβ40 and Aβ42 peptides have not been completely elucidated to date. Although, several studies suggest that these peptides have a number of neurotrophic and neurotoxic properties, respectively.

Background: Cancer is a major burden of disease and a public health problem, as it is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is estimated that 25% of cancer patients die without receiving proper pain management.
Objective: To acknowledge the epidemiological profile of first-time patients at the palliative care service of a referral center, along with the pharmaceutical treatment and social and familiar implications of the treatment costs in first-time patients.
Motor learning is a multi-stage process, in which the involvement of different brain regions is related to the specific stage. We aimed at characterising short timescale changes of brain activity induced by motor sequence learning. Twenty healthy volunteers performed a serial reaction time task during an MRI session in a 3 T scanner.

The brain's response to damage is of particular interest in multiple sclerosis, a chronic disease characterized by inflammatory and neurodegenerative damage to the central nervous system. Functional MRI (fMRI) is a tool that allows functional changes related to the disease and to its evolution to be studied in vivo.

Twenty-two of the 24 patients operated on with femoral supracondylar osteotomy for arthritic valgus knee between 1978 and 1987 were evaluated, comparing the results with those obtained in a similar group of 10 patients with the same disorder treated with knee replacement during the same period. From a functional viewpoint and according to the Hospital for Special Surgery rating scale, the results of the osteotomy were not significantly different from the extremely positive outcome of the knee replacement. However, as far as pain is concerned, only 50% of the osteotomy patients were completely asymptomatic after the operation.

The theoretical compartmental model cannot be estimated by a dialytic treatment, but a simpler diffusive model may be considered. Once the stationary level is reached, the net flux of P from the inaccessible compartments to the accessible compartment may be estimated via the parameters obtained in the exponential model.

Unlabelled: Acquired genu recurvatum may have bone, capsulo-ligamentous or combined origins. It may affect the tibia or femur and various etiologies are possible. However, its pathogenesis is often linked to partial anterior epiphysiodesis following traumatic damage to the femoral or tibial growth plate.

On the basis of the operative examination it is thought that the etiopathogenesis may consist of a congenital retraction of the capsule, in plantar aspect, and of the collateral ligaments; they advise that surgical treatment should be carried out before the start of ambulation. The correction obtained proved stable over time.
