Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate how the results of modified barium swallow (MBS) and esophagram imaging correlate with clinical improvements after esophageal dilation in patients who have had head and neck (H&N) cancer.
  • A total of 95 patients were analyzed, showing significant improvement in swallowing function scores post-dilation, but the predictive value of MBS and esophagram for identifying who would benefit from dilation was limited (with negative predictive values of only 46% and 38%).
  • The findings highlight that while MBS and esophagram are helpful tools, their effectiveness in ruling out patients who won’t improve after dilation is poor, particularly for those with cervical esophageal stenosis, indicating a need for careful

Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to assess the prevalence of dysphagia in elderly patients (65+) at a tertiary care center, finding that 24% of the 655 patients reviewed suffered from it, while 43% were malnourished.
  • Dysphagia correlated with malnutrition and was more prevalent among older patients, particularly those admitted to cardiology or neurology units, and a history of stroke increased its occurrence.
  • The research highlights a concerning gap in identifying dysphagia in malnourished patients and suggests addressing this could enhance patient care and reduce healthcare costs.

Burn wound photography has diverse clinical applications; however, inherent technological limitations mitigate its utility. Limitations include lack of quality control, serial imaging, complexity, and expense. With the performance gap between smart devices and digital cameras rapidly narrowing, and computing performance increasing, smart devices are poised to uniquely address these limitations and enhance the field of wound photography.
