Electroconvulsive therapy can induce mania. A recent change in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition classifies electroconvulsive therapy-induced manic episodes as a bipolar type I diagnosis. There are no current established guidelines to treat such condition.
