We conducted a survey among the worldwide network of EAS FHSC Lead Investigators to provide an overview of FH status in different countries.
Methods: Lead Investigators from countries formally involved in the EAS FHSC by mid-May 2018 were invited to provide a brief report on FH status in their countries, including available information, programmes, initiatives, and management.
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are covalently closed single-stranded RNA molecules derived from exons by alternative mRNA splicing. Circularization of single-stranded RNA molecules was already described in 1976 for viroids in plants. Since then several additional types of circular RNAs in many species have been described such as the circular single-stranded RNA genome of the hepatitis delta virus (HDV) or circular RNAs as products or intermediates of tRNA and rRNA maturation in archaea.

Here we report that genome-wide quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses in recombinant inbred mouse lines of C57BL/6 J and DBA2/J strains identified Raf Kinase Inhibitor Protein (RKIP) as genetic marker of fibrosis progression. C57BL/6 N-RKIP mice demonstrated diminished fibrosis induced by transverse aortic constriction (TAC) or CCl (carbon tetrachloride) treatment compared with wild-type controls.

Receptors-for-Advanced-Glycation-End-products (RAGE) activate pro-inflammatory programs mediated by carboxymethyllysine (CML) and high-mobility-group-box1 protein (HMGB1). The soluble isoform sRAGE neutralizes RAGE-ligands preventing cardiovascular complications in conditions associated with increased sympathetic activation like hypertension and diabetes. The effects of sympathetic modulation on RAGE/sRAGE-balance and end-organ damage in metabolic syndrome on top of hypertension remains unknown.

We present the case of a 10-year-old boy suffering from homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia with generalized atherosclerosis and large xanthomas. The case impressively demonstrates the potential of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol lowering to rapidly regress pathologic cutaneous manifestations of hypercholesterolemia.

The pilot study randomized 50 patients to a pharmacy-based intervention or usual care for 12 months. It demonstrated the feasibility of the design and showed reduced systolic blood pressure in the intervention group as indicator for improved medication adherence.

This expert opinion paper on atrial fibrillation detection after ischemic stroke includes a statement of the "Heart and Brain" consortium of the German Cardiac Society and the German Stroke Society. This paper was endorsed by the Stroke Unit-Commission of the German Stroke Society and the German Atrial Fibrillation NETwork. In patients with ischemic stroke, detection of atrial fibrillation should usually lead to a change in secondary stroke prevention, since oral anticoagulation is superior to antiplatelet drugs.

Methods: Biopsies from the right atrium were taken before and after CPB from 4 newborns (5-11 days old) and 7 children (8 months-16 years old). Immunostainings on 10 µm heart tissue frozen sections were performed to detect c-kit cells, leukocytes (CD45 cells), Ki67 cycling cells.
Secondary mitral regurgitation (MR) results from left ventricular dilatation and dysfunction. Quantification of secondary MR is challenging because of the underlying myocardial disease. Clinical and echocardiographic evaluation requires a multi-parametric approach.

Bi-directional feedback interactions between the heart and the brain are inherent in the pathophysiology of HF: (i) the impaired cardiac function affects cerebral structure and functional capacity, and (ii) neuronal signals impact on the cardiovascular continuum. These interactions contribute to the symptomatic presentation of HF patients and affect many co-morbidities of HF.
