Treatment results, survival and prognostic factors in 109 inflammatory breast cancers: univariate and multivariate analysis.

Between 1978 and 1987, 109 patients without metastatic disease were treated by induction chemotherapy for inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) or "neglected" locally advanced breast cancer (LABC): 62 patients had a clinical history of rapidly growing tumours (doubling time < or = 4 months) and inflammatory signs; conversely, the 47 neglected patients had local inflammation with a longer history of LABC. 103 patients were fully evaluable. All patients received the same induction chemotherapy with doxorubicin, vincristine, cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil.

[Intestinal metastases from breast cancer. Apropos of 8 cases].

Eight patients with intestinal metastases from breast cancer are described. The different clinical presentations and pathological types are studied. The difficulty in distinguishing such uncommon secondary sites of breast cancer from primary intestinal cancer is emphasized.

[Uterine metastases originating from breast cancer. Apropos of 12 cases].

The authors report a retrospective clinicopathologic analysis based on 12 cases of uterine metastases from breast cancer. The myometrium was more often involved than the endometrium, and a metastatic lesion occurred in an interstitial leiomyoma in one case. Bilateral ovarian involvement was associated in 11 cases.

Is an "ideal" service institution image the same for all referral sources? The case of chemical dependency treatment programs.

In a competitive market like chemical dependency treatment, segmenting the professional referral market according to an "ideal" service image may offer a service institution a strategic advantage. Results of this study suggest that while different professionals in a referral market may attach differential importance to the same service feature, a favorable or unfavorable "image" seems to encompass how well both the professional and the professionals' client are treated by the service institution.

Locating MRIs through marginal analysis.

The location decision for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services facility is evaluated through marginal analysis. Both population-based and referral-based data are applied. The results provide input for a series of practical recommendations for MRI service providers.

[Demons-Meigs' syndrome. A case of thecoma and ovarian fibroma].

The authors report two cases of Demons-Meigs' syndrome, one following an ovarian fibrothecoma and the other an ovarian fibroma. There was a striking rise in the serum CA 125 level which was higher than 200 UI/ml, suggestive of cancer of the ovary in both cases. With the help of the literature data, the clinicopathological features of this rare condition and the different hypotheses concerning its aetiology are commented.

[Post-menopausal endometriosis developed during tamoxifen treatment].

The authors report a case of endometriosis (adenomyosis + endometrioma) which occurred in a female patient aged 69 years, who had undergone the menopause 15 years previously and who had been taking Tamoxifen for 7 years as an adjuvant treatment for cancer of the breast. Tamoxifen, a non-steroidal anti-estrogen derived from diethylstilbestrol, has a variable antagonist/agonist so that estrogenic stimulation of the female genital tract may occur, particularly of the endometrial mucosa. The reactivation of the endometriosic foci which had become quiescent under the impact of the natural menopause, which, by iatrogenic analogy is included in the series of paradoxical uterine effects of tamoxifen.

Use of sulfonation method to determine DNA contamination of cell cultured monoclonal antibodies produced for human therapeutics.

In the past few years, culture of transformed mammalian cells has been widely used to produce natural or recombinant molecules, as monoclonal antibodies (MAb) and cytokines. For therapeutic use, the cellular DNA level must be determined. A number of techniques have been developed to measure the DNA content, based on sequential extraction blotting and hybridization with a labeled DNA probe.

Intraexaminer, interexaminer, and interdevice comparability of leg length measurements obtained with measuring tape and metrecom.

Leg length inequalities result from a variety of clinical abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to compare repeated leg length measurements taken by two examiners with two devices during a single session. The two devices that were used were a standard tape measure and a Metrecom.

[Uterine metastasis of breast cancer. Report of 8 cases].

The authors report a retrospective clinicopathologic study of 8 cases of uterine metastases from breast cancer. This is the largest surgical series dealing with this subject to be published to date. Not autopsy case has been considered.

AIDS prevention and college students: male and female responses to "fear-provoking" messages.

This study was designed to examine the effects of fear appeals in AIDS prevention messages and to determine whether or not males and females differ in their response to these appeals. MANOVA results from a sample of 179 junior and senior business students at a mid-Atlantic urban university indicate that significant differences in message effects were associated with type of appeal, gender of the respondent, and the interaction between appeal and gender.

Anti-human interleukin 2 receptor monoclonal antibody isotypic switching: chimeric rat-human antibodies.

Univalent and bivalent (2Fab'-Fc) chimeric rat-human antibodies were constructed by chemical coupling (thioether bonds) of Fab' fragments from the 33B31 rat anti-human interleukin 2 receptor (alpha chain) monoclonal antibody to human IgG or Fc fragments. The purity of the chimeric antibodies obtained after purification was assessed by the sodium dodecyl sulfide-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis method. The affinity of chimeric antibodies for the human interleukin 2 receptor was determined.

Immunohistochemical evaluation of reverse transcriptase in breast carcinoma with polyclonal antibodies raised in rabbit.

In this study, the presence of reverse transcriptase in breast tumours was examined with immunoperoxidase staining using antibodies raised in rabbit against reverse transcriptase of Moloney murine leukemia virus and against reverse transcriptase of avian myeloblastosis virus. The specificity of such antibodies was investigated with ELISA and Western blotting techniques. Five cases of infiltrating ductal carcinomas were found positive with the immune serum anti-reverse transcriptase of Moloney murine leukemia virus on 28 studied infiltrating ductal carcinomas, 2 infiltrating lobular carcinomas and 2 fibroadenomas.

Immunopharmacological activity of monoclonal antidigitoxin.

A monoclonal antibody specific to digitoxin was developed and Fab fragments were prepared using the conventional papain method. The affinity constant was determined as 10(9)M-1 and the cross reactivity with digoxin was 2%. The Fab fragments were used for the reversal of acute digitoxin poisoning in rabbits (100% mortality).

Multiple coarctations of the pulmonary artery: scintigraphic appearance.

A case of angiography-proven multiple coarctations of the pulmonary arteries is presented. The patient had a history of long-standing exertional dyspnea and intranasal cocaine use. A chest radiograph suggested oligemia in the left lung and enlargement of the right pulmonary artery, prompting ventilation and perfusion radionuclide lung imaging.

[Metrorrhagia and tamoxifen. Apropos of 22 patients treated for cancer of the breast].

The authors report 22 cases of metrorrhagia occurring in the course of adjuvant hormonal therapy for breast cancer using tamoxifen. The anti-oestrogenic effect of this drug is associated with a variable agonistic effect that has been observed in organs with steroid receptors, and especially in the uterus. In this series, the cause of the abnormal bleeding is explained in 17 out of the 22 cases (ie, 3 out of 4) as a paradoxical oestrogen-like effect on the mucosa of the uterus.

[Epithelial cancer of the ovary. Contribution of the experiences of a treatment facility to the current data of prognosis and treatment].

Results obtained by the authors and a review of the literature have made them able to point out recent developments in cases of epithelial cancer of the ovary diagnosed in an advanced stage of the disease. This is the most frequent finding when the diagnosis is made and it is most important in assessing the future prognosis to know how far on the disease has progressed. Cancer of the ovary has long been thought of as a peritoneal disease, but all the same 40% of metastases occur further away and the majority of these are in the pleura or the lung and more rarely in the brain; and all these have been observed.

Using fear appeals in advertising for AIDS prevention in the college-age population.

A multiple-indicator model reveals the impact of AIDS prevention advertising on dimensions of arousal and subsequent cognitive impressions of the advertisement. Exploratory results obtained from a sample of college students indicate that levels of arousal and impressions of the advertisement vary according to emphasis on the deadly consequences of AIDS. These findings have strategic implications for addressing important target groups such as college students.

Polyclonal rabbit gamma globulins against a human cytotoxic CD4 T cell clone. II. Use in prevention of rejection in kidney transplantation: a pilot study.

Antiblast globulins (GAB) were prepared by immunization of rabbits with activated T lymphocytes (AT) derived from a rejected kidney allograft. AT consisted of a CD4+ (CD3+, CD2+ TCR alpha+ beta+) clone cytotoxic for HLA DR8-positive targets. The immunizing cells were adapted to industrial growth conditions by repetitive stimulations with an EBV-transformed line from the kidney donor and recombinant IL-2.

Polyclonal rabbit gamma globulins against a human cytotoxic CD4+ T cell clone. I. Clone characteristics and antiblast globulin preparation.

Antihuman lymphocyte rabbit (or horse) gamma globulins used in recipients of organ transplantation are prepared against thymocytes or immortalized cell lines, the only two sources so far allowing enough antigen preparation. These cells lack, however, the surface determinants characteristic of alloreactive blasts involved in the rejection process. We have derived long-term cultures of a panel of alloreactive (untransformed) clones from a rejected kidney.

[Subclinical lesions of the breast. Stereotactic localization and biopsy-excision].

Three hundred and eighty nine preoperative localizations were performed in the senology department of the Centre Jean Perrin in 349 patients presenting with an isolated radiological image with no associated clinical signs (discovered on routine or selective screening examinations). The most frequent anomaly detected was the presence of areas of microcalcifications, sometimes associated with a high-density lesion or more rarely an opacity. Systematic enlargements allowed refinement of the surgical indications and reduced the number of tumourectomies performed for benign lesions.
