Background: Morphological and vascular characteristics of breast cancer can change during neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI)-acquired pre- and mid-treatment quantitatively capture information about tumor heterogeneity as potential earlier indicators of pathological complete response (pCR) to NAC in breast cancer.

Aims: This study aimed to develop an ensemble deep learning-based model, exploiting a Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture, which merges features automatically extracted from five segmented slices of both pre- and mid-treatment exams containing the maximum tumor area, to predict and monitor pCR to NAC.

Background: Myoclonus and other jerky movement disorders are hyperkinetic disorders, the diagnosis of which heavily relies on clinical neurophysiological testing. However, formal diagnostic criteria are lacking, and recently the utility and reliability of these tests have been questioned.

Objective: The aim of this review was to assess the utilization of clinical neurophysiology testing to identify possible gaps and boundaries that might guide the development of new methods for a more precise diagnosis and in-depth understanding of myoclonus.

Introduction: Recent new advances in myoclonus characterization and etiology justify an update of the 40-year-old respected classification of myoclonus proposed by Marsden, Hallett, and Fahn. New advances include genetic studies and clinical neurophysiology characterization.

Methods: The IAPRD appointed an expert panel to develop a new myoclonus classification.

The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large 't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics.

Background And Objective: Detecting patients at high risk of occurrence of an Invasive Disease Event after a first diagnosis of breast cancer, such as recurrence, distant metastasis, contralateral tumor and second tumor, could support clinical decision-making processes in the treatment of this malignancy. Though several machine learning models analyzing both clinical and histopathological information have been developed in literature to address this task, these approaches turned out to be unsuitable for describing this problem.

Methods: In this study, we designed a novel artificial intelligence-based approach which converts clinical information into an image-form to be analyzed through Convolutional Neural Networks.

Article Synopsis
  • Complications from community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), such as cardiovascular events and mortality, can arise both during the illness and afterward; this study explores the role of specific biomarkers related to endothelial damage compared to traditional inflammation markers.
  • The research analyzed data from 515 patients, measuring various biomarkers at different time intervals (day 1, day 5, and day 30) to determine their relationship with ICU admission, cardiovascular events, and mortality.
  • Findings indicated that endothelial damage biomarkers (CT-proET-1 and MR-proADM) were more strongly associated with negative outcomes than inflammation markers (CRP and PCT), with MR-proADM being the most effective at predicting complications in both the short and long term.

Using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of collected by the CMS experiment at , the decay is observed for the first time, with a statistical significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. The relative branching fraction, with respect to the decay, is measured to be , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is related to the uncertainties in and .

A search for collective effects inside jets produced in proton-proton collisions is performed via correlation measurements of charged particles using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The analysis uses data collected at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1}. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-k_{T} algorithm with a distance parameter of 0.

Background: Dystonia presents a growing concern based on evolving prevalence insights. Previous research found that, in cervical dystonia, high-frequency repetitive somatosensory stimulation (RSS; HF-RSS) applied on digital nerves paradoxically diminishes sensorimotor inhibitory mechanisms, whereas low-frequency RSS (LF-RSS) increases them. However, direct testing on affected body parts was not conducted.

Energy correlators that describe energy-weighted distances between two or three particles in a hadronic jet are measured using an event sample of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3  fb^{-1}. The measured distributions are consistent with the trends in the simulation that reveal two key features of the strong interaction: confinement and asymptotic freedom.

We assessed the impact of DNA damage response and repair (DDR) biomarker expressions in 222 node-positive early breast cancer (BC) patients from a previous Phase III GOIM 9902 trial of adjuvant taxanes. At a median follow-up of 64 months, the original study showed no disease-free survival (DFS) or overall survival (OS) differences with the addition of docetaxel (D) to epirubicine-cyclophosphamide (EC). Immunohistochemistry was employed to assess the expression of DDR phosphoproteins (pATM, pATR, pCHK1, γH2AX, pRPA32, and pWEE1) in tumor tissue, and their association with clinical outcomes was evaluated through the Cox elastic net model.

  • Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a debilitating condition that has been under-studied in non-white European populations, prompting an investigation into its characteristics among South Asian patients.
  • A study involving 27 South Asian PSP patients (primarily Indians) revealed a mean age of onset at 63.8 years, with a notable 22% experiencing early onset before age 60, and common symptoms including parkinsonism and cognitive dysfunction.
  • The findings indicated higher occurrences of atypical symptoms and family history of parkinsonism, suggesting that current MDS diagnostic criteria may not adequately capture the clinical picture in this ethnic group, highlighting the need for further research.

Article Synopsis
  • Essential tremor (ET) is a common condition that disrupts daily life, and traditional treatments often fall short; transcutaneous spinal cord electrical stimulation (tSCS) has been proposed as a noninvasive method to help alleviate tremors.
  • A study with 18 ET patients found that tSCS at the patient's specific tremor frequency reduced the amplitude of the tremors, particularly during the second half of stimulation, while other frequencies and trapezius stimulation showed less effective or even exacerbating results.
  • The findings suggest that tSCS could be a promising approach for managing ET, potentially by disrupting the nerve activity responsible for tremors, although the exact mechanisms and interactions within the nervous system require further exploration.

High-throughput sequencing studies have shown that diet or antimicrobial treatments impact animal gut microbiota equilibrium. However, properties related to the gut microbial ecosystem stability, such as resilience, resistance, or functional redundancy, must be better understood. To shed light on these ecological processes, we combined advanced statistical methods with 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, functional prediction, and fitness analyses in the gut microbiota of the cockroach Blattella germanica subject to three periodic pulses of the antibiotic (AB) kanamycin (n=512).

The production of ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions is studied in their dimuon decay channel using the CMS detector at the LHC. The ϒ(3S) meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and pp collisions are reported for both the ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality.
