Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) results in a predominantly CD18-independent mechanism of neutrophil recruitment, while direct endotoxin-induced lung injury results from a CD18-dependent mechanism. We previously observed that lack of NADPH oxidases DUOX1 and DUOX2 resulted in reduced neutrophil influx in a VILI model of lung injury but had no influence on neutrophil influx after LPS exposure.

Aim: The study aims to evaluate the impact of general practice clinical audits on early-stage graduate entry students' audit and research self-efficacy and explore feasibility issues from the student and GP perspective.
Background: Although it is accepted that providing medical students with opportunities to engage in research activity is beneficial, little data has been collated on how medical degree curricula may address this issue. This review aims to address this knowledge gap by conducting a scoping review examining curriculum initiatives that seek to enhance research experience for medical students.
Methods: This review looks to specifically look at 'doing research' as defined by the MEDINE 2 consensus rather than 'using research' for the bachelor component of the Bologna Cycle.
Background: The attitudes and empathy levels of healthcare providers towards persons with a disability have been highlighted as important factors contributing to the quality of healthcare provided to this patient population.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether changes in medical students' attitudes and empathy towards persons with a disability following an educational intervention were maintained when measured again one year post intervention. This study provided a one year longitudinal follow up to a previous study investigating the efficacy of an educational intervention to cultivate positive change in empathy levels and attitudes towards disability.

Recently, we discovered that triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) serves as a new receptor of eCIRP to exaggerate inflammation. Methods: A national needs assessment was conducted among general practitioners (GPs) in the Republic of Ireland who attended continuing medical education small group learning meetings (CME-SGL) in late 2017.
The World Health Organisation policy of improving retention of rural health care practitioners recommended that continuing medical education (CME) programmes addressing their needs should be accessible and delivered where they live and work. This cross-sectional study involved a self-administered anonymous questionnaire completed by GPs attending CME small groups (CME-SGL) in Ireland. All GPs attending CME-SGL in a one-month period were invited to complete the questionnaire which examined demographic details, distance to travel to educational meetings/nearest regional hospital, barriers to accessing continuing education, whether CME-SGL met their educational needs, morale and professional isolation.

Ras, a small GTPase protein, is thought to mediate Th2-dependent eosinophilic inflammation in asthma. Ras requires cell membrane association for its biological activity, and this requires the posttranslational modification of Ras with an isoprenyl group by farnesyltransferase (FTase) or geranylgeranyltransferase (GGTase). Various lung protective mechanical ventilation strategies have attempted to reduce or prevent ventilator-induced lung injury but few modalities have proven effective. A model that isolates the contribution of mechanical ventilation on the development of acute lung injury is needed to better understand biologic mechanisms that lead to ventilator-induced lung injury.
