Combined endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery (CELS) for early colon cancer in high-risk patients.

Background: Local excision of early colon cancers could be an option in selected patients with high risk of complications and no sign of lymph node metastasis (LNM). The primary aim was to assess feasibility in high-risk patients with early colon cancer treated with Combined Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery (CELS).

Methods: A non-randomized prospective feasibility study including 25 patients with Performance Status score ≥ 1 and/or American Society of Anesthesiologists score ≥ 3, and clinical Union of International Cancer Control stage-1 colon cancer suitable for CELS resection.

Variation of extrachromosomal circular DNA in cancer cell lines.

The presence of oncogene carrying eccDNAs is strongly associated with carcinogenesis and poor patient survival. Tumour biopsies and cancer cell lines are frequently utilized as models to investigate the role of eccDNA in cancer. However, eccDNAs are often lost during the growth of cancer cell lines, questioning the reproducibility of studies utilizing cancer cell line models.

First episode of uncomplicated diverticulitis does not increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Introduction: Danish guidelines recommend colonoscopy after a case of acute diverticulitis to exclude colorectal cancer (CRC), but evidence in support this practice is limited. A series of studies has reported a low incidence of CRC in patients after they presented with acute diverticulitis, especially in uncomplicated cases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of CRC after acute diverticulitis detected during colonoscopy.

Lumen-apposing metal stent for treatment of malignant biliary obstruction, placed through an uncovered duodenal self-expanding metal stent.

The development and refinement of endoscopic stenting techniques in recent years have made endoscopic treatment an important part of palliative care for irresectable malignant disease in the gastrointestinal tract. We present the case of a 82-year-old man with biliary obstruction and duodenal stenosis on the basis of disseminated pancreatic cancer. He was bothered by jaundice and reduced oral intake.

[Lymphomas found by endoscopic screening for colorectal cancer].

While performing the screening programme for colorectal cancer in Denmark, some cases of adenomas have been found. By histological analysis they were shown to be lymphomas. In this case report, two such cases are described.

Hepatic epitheloid haemangioendothelioma: a rare malignant tumour.

Our case concerns a 66-year-old man. After experiencing recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, an initial CT scan, ultrasound and gastroscopy was carried out. All of which showed normal findings.

[Colonoscopy following acute diverticulitis mandatory].

According to international guidelines, patients presenting with acute diverticulitis are offered lower endoscopy to rule out colorectal cancer. This practice is based on weak evidence. Recent studies have established that the incidence of colorectal cancer after acute diverticulitis is low.

[Evidence-based treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss].

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a condition, in which an idiopathic rapid unilateral decline in hearing thresholds is seen. In this review, the latest research is summarised. In Denmark, the traditional treatment is systemic steroids (SST), but new research reveals, that the use of SST lacks evidence.

Local Th17/IgA immunity correlate with protection against intranasal infection with Streptococcus pyogenes.

Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus, GAS) is responsible for a wide array of infections. Respiratory transmission via droplets is the most common mode of transmission but it may also infect the host via other routes such as lesions in the skin. To advance the development of a future vaccine against GAS, it is therefore important to investigate how protective immunity is related to the route of vaccine administration.

[Endoscopic full-thickness resection of adenoma in colon].

A new technique allows endoscopic resection of lesions (< 2.5 cm) as full-thickness resection from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily the colon. The technique is called endoscopic full-thickness resection (eFTR).

Aluminium hydroxide potentiates a protective Th1 biased immune response against polio virus that allows for dose sparing in mice and rats.

Background: The development of new low cost inactivated polio virus based vaccines (IPV) is a high priority and will be essential for the complete eradication of polio. Since the aluminium hydroxide adjuvant is widely used in humans we tested this adjuvant with IPV in two models. Our objective was twofold; to examine the IPV dose sparing effect of aluminium hydroxide and how the adjuvant effect of aluminium hydroxide affected the immunity induced by IPV.

[Accidental discovery of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT-positive papilloma in sinus sphenoidalis in a patient with recurrence of breast cancer].

A patient suspected for metastatic breast cancer went through an 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT). Along with metastatic lymph nodes in the neck it showed high 18F-FDG uptake in a polypoidal structure in the sinus sphenoidalis. When asked she had no related symptoms due to the sphenoid polyp and the CT-scan showed no bone destruction.

[Headache can be caused by spontaneous intracranial hypotension].

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is an uncommon condition associated with postural headache, nausea and dizziness. It is believed to be secondary to a dural tear with resultant cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. This is a case report of a pregnant woman (gestational age 31 weeks) who contacted an obstetric department because of severe headache.

GLP-2 and mesenteric blood flow.

The 33 amino acid peptide hormone GLP-2 is produced by enteroendocrine L-cells, the density of which is highest in the ileum and the colon, in response to the presence of nutrients in the lumen. The biological effect of GLP-2 is mediated by activation of a G-protein-coupled 7-transmembrane receptor. GLP-2 receptors are expressed in the brainstem, lungs, stomach, small intestine and colon, but not in the heart.
