Liquid silicone embolism syndrome (SES) in lungs and liver - A case report.

Silicone embolism syndrome (SES) is a well known complication after injection of silicone gel as well as liquid silicone. Rarely, men use physiologic salt solution or liquid silicone injected into the subcutaneous tissue of the scrotum, the penis, the upper genital or the inguinal region. Those men, who call themselves "siliconers", want to get a larger penis and scrotum, also visible when wearing clothes.

According to the current state of knowledge, several internal organs are usually involved in cases of SARS-CoV‑2 infections with a fatal course. Pathological changes are primarily found in lung tissues but there are also reports concerning direct or indirect (histo)pathological changes due to SARS-CoV‑2 infections in samples from the kidneys, liver and myocardium. Comparing three fatal cases associated with SARS-CoV‑2 infections in men using conventional histological staining, there were partly identical findings that enabled interpretations with respect to the chronology and pathophysiology of the disease.

Sphingolipids in human synovial fluid--a lipidomic study.

Articular synovial fluid (SF) is a complex mixture of components that regulate nutrition, communication, shock absorption, and lubrication. Alterations in its composition can be pathogenic. This lipidomic investigation aims to quantify the composition of sphingolipids (sphingomyelins, ceramides, and hexosyl- and dihexosylceramides) and minor glycerophospholipid species, including (lyso)phosphatidic acid, (lyso)phosphatidylglycerol, and bis(monoacylglycero)phosphate species, in the SF of knee joints from unaffected controls and from patients with early (eOA) and late (lOA) stages of osteoarthritis (OA), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

A lipidomic study of phospholipid classes and species in human synovial fluid.

Objective: Membrane phospholipid species contribute to boundary lubrication that is provided by synovial fluid (SF). Altered levels of lubricants can be associated with increased friction, leading to articular cartilage damage. This study was undertaken to determine whether the composition of phospholipid species is altered in diseases of human knee joints.

Investigative strategy for the forensic detection of sperm traces.

In a retrospective study, the results from 786 samples of alleged sexual assaults during a 5-year period were evaluated. Of the samples, 758 were from female victims and 28 were from male victims. The material examined during this 5-year period consisted of 561 cotton swabs with swabs taken from the genitals, mouth, anus, or skin surface.

Vitality and age of conjunctival petechiae: the expression of P-selectin.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) results in displaying multiple ruptures of capillaries and venules define conjunctival petechiae as a rhexis haemorrhage. In order to distinguish between petechiae which have arisen before death as opposed to post-mortem artefacts and the establishment of the age of the vessel's damage, we carried out an investigation on a collection of samples from medico-legal cases (positive petechiae: n=65; post-mortem artefacts: n=12; control: n=19) to establish whether the expression of the endothelial adhesion molecule P-selectin as demonstrated by immunohistochemical methods is influenced by trauma before death and possibly by time. Except for cases with massive congestion in those cases where the victim had survived for around minutes, CLSM examination revealed a strong endothelial reaction at the site where the vessel had ruptured.

Pathogenesis of conjunctival petechiae.

Conjunctival petechiae from 15 cases (cause of death: different natural and unnatural) were analysed using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in order to visualize the kind of the damage within the vessel wall (diapedesis versus rhexis). The pathomorphological findings with multiple ruptures of vessels appearing to be filled to bursting point define the conjunctival petechiae as a rhexis-haemorrhage.

Crossbow homicides.

A total of eight cases of homicide by crossbow are reported, including six intentional, assault-like killings and one hired killer. The bolts showed a high penetration capacity despite the rather low kinetic energy (<100 J): a field-tip traversed one upper arm and the thorax (36 cm) and two broadheads caused perforating injuries of the thorax (25-26 cm). This was due to the high sectional density and the split-like penetration mechanism.

Death creates a bizarre scenery: a case report.

The bodies of two men in their early forties were found lying in a peculiar position in an apartment. Police and medical investigations suggested that both had, at the most, died 2 weeks earlier. One of the men was kneeling, holding on to the back of a chair-with his hand, and was bent over the second man lying on the floor.

Visualization of postmortem chondrocyte damage by vital staining and confocal laser scanning 3D microscopy.

The present study was designed to investigate whether the combination of vital dyes [calcein acetomethyl ester and ethidium homodimer (LIVE/DEAD Viability/Cytoxicity Kit)] together with confocal laser scanning 3D microscopy was a suitable process to detect postmortem chondrocyte damage, and whether this process could be used to establish postmortem interval. Human knee cartilage from 13 autopsies (postmortem interval from 1 day to 2.5 months) was incubated with the two dyes.

An unusual airplane crash--deadly life saver. Unintentional activation of an automated reserve opening device causing airplane accident.

A Pilatus PC 6 "Turbo-Porter" crashed after having dropped skydivers. The interdisciplinary investigation of the crash revealed that the automated reserve opening device "Student-CYPRES" which the passenger wore on his parachute system had been set off during the landing approach. The parachute pulled the passenger out of the airplane.

Paternity-testing on paraffin-embedded abortion tissue: preparation of fetal cells may be indispensable.

In a case of sexual abuse, a paternity test was performed on paraffin embedded abortion material. STR typing was successful only after isolating fetal tissue from the abortion-material and separately extracting DNA from the excised fetal cells. Examination with five STRs led to a paternity index of 332, confirming the abuse that had resulted in pregnancy.

In a multicenter study we therefore examined the police and court records for such cases occurring in the period from 1 January 1985 to 2 October 1990 in nearly the entire area of Federal Republic of Germany.

Results: The study center received information on 19 cases of lethal child neglect.

Analysis of 24 autopsy cases ordered by insurances and performed at the Institute of Legal Medicine, Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz (FRG), in the years from 1985 to 1991 revealed that even if there was a long period of time between accident and death (average: 20.3 years; maximum: 55 years) and in cases of exhumation necropsy was a useful tool in checking the relative's claim to insurance premium. Eight children at the age of one to eleven years, their mother and uncle were victims of fire that had broken out in their flat. They all died of combined carbon monoxide cyanide poisoning. The rectal temperature of the bodies taken nearly eight hours later ranged from 16 degrees C to 29 degrees C.
