Using 1-Hz GPS data to measure deformations caused by the Denali fault earthquake.

The 3 November 2002 moment magnitude 7.9 Denali fault earthquake generated large, permanent surface displacements in Alaska and large-amplitude surface waves throughout western North America. We find good agreement between strong ground-motion records integrated to displacement and 1-hertz Global Positioning System (GPS) position estimates collected approximately 140 kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.

Role of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in the management of suspected choledocholithiasis.

Background: Indications for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are not precisely defined. With the increasing availability of magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and several prospective studies proving the accuracy of this modality, it is important to select appropriate criteria for invasive testing when common bile duct (CBD) pathology is suspected.

Methods: We reviewed 200 consecutive ERCPs performed for jaundice, pancreatitis, noninvasive visualization of CBD stones, radiologic evidence of CBD dilatation, elevated liver function tests, or biliary colic.

Amphiphilic hairy disks with branched hydrophilic tails and a hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene core.

Amphiphilic discotic molecules with hydrophilic side branches consisting of hexaphenyl hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene and hexabiphenyl hexa-peri-hexabiphenylcoronene as the aromatic core and hexa-substituted oligoethers as the branched peripheral chains have been synthesized, and their microstructure has been characterized. The discotic molecules based on dibranched oligoether side chains have been observed to self-organize into a well-ordered hexagonal columnar structure within liquid crystalline phases, which possessed an exceptionally high thermal stability and an unusually wide temperature range over >300 degrees C. We suggest that a combination of the large lateral dimensions of the rigid cores and disordered structure of the oxygen-containing branches tails is a driving force to the formation of a highly ordered columnar structure in the bulk state with enhanced molecular segregation.

Rural elementary students', parents', and teachers' perceptions of bullying.

Objective: To examine the prevalence and correlates of bullying in 7 rural elementary schools from students', parents', and teachers' perspectives.

Method: Surveys were completed by 739 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students, 367 parents, and 37 teachers.

Results: Students tended to report higher prevalence of bullying than did parents or teachers, and their reports were associated with aggression, attitudes toward violence, and perceptions of school safety.

Surface melt-induced acceleration of Greenland ice-sheet flow.

Ice flow at a location in the equilibrium zone of the west-central Greenland Ice Sheet accelerates above the midwinter average rate during periods of summer melting. The near coincidence of the ice acceleration with the duration of surface melting, followed by deceleration after the melting ceases, indicates that glacial sliding is enhanced by rapid migration of surface meltwater to the ice-bedrock interface. Interannual variations in the ice acceleration are correlated with variations in the intensity of the surface melting, with larger increases accompanying higher amounts of summer melting.

AIDS knowledge and measurement considerations with unacculturated Latinos.

Likert-type scales are frequently used in research with different ethnic groups. Differences in cultural response styles and understanding of the scale have long been noted but rarely explored in research. This article presents the authors' experiences in using a Likert-type questionnaire to measure AIDS knowledge among recently arrived Mexican immigrants in the southeastern United States.

Evaluating end-of-life care from the perspective of the patient's family.

This article is written from personal experiences with the recent death of the authors' mother. It highlights the problems the authors encountered, while acknowledging the positive aspects of treatment during a difficult time. The overall purpose is to improve end-of-life care by advancing policy through research, legislation, and education.

Effectiveness of intradiscal electrothermal therapy in increasing function and reducing chronic low back pain in selected patients.

Intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET) is a percutaneous intervention used to treat pain from internal disc disruption. We reviewed the patients who underwent this procedure in our practice. We found, in an appropriately selected group of patients, an increase in sitting and standing tolerances and a decrease in pain levels.

Present-day crustal deformation in China constrained by global positioning system measurements.

Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements in China indicate that crustal shortening accommodates most of India's penetration into Eurasia. Deformation within the Tibetan Plateau and its margins, the Himalaya, the Altyn Tagh, and the Qilian Shan, absorbs more than 90% of the relative motion between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Internal shortening of the Tibetan plateau itself accounts for more than one-third of the total convergence.

Soybean genomic survey: BAC-end sequences near RFLP and SSR markers.

We are building a framework physical infrastructure across the soybean genome by using SSR (simple sequence repeat) and RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) markers to identify BACs (bacterial artificial chromosomes) from two soybean BAC libraries. The libraries were prepared from two genotypes, each digested with a different restriction enzyme. The BACs identified by each marker were grouped into contigs.

Characterization of subsets of human spermatozoa at different stages of maturation: implications in the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility.

Background: Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced damage of membrane phospholipids and DNA in human spermatozoa has been implicated in the pathogenesis of male infertility. In this study, variations in ROS production, DNA structure (as measured by the sperm chromatin structure assay) and lipid composition, were studied in human spermatozoa at different stages of maturation.

Methods: Sperm subsets were isolated by discontinuous density gradient centrifugation of semen samples obtained from healthy donors and from infertility patients.

Mouse eosinophil-associated ribonucleases: a unique subfamily expressed during hematopoiesis.

A unique family of ribonucleases was identified by exhaustive screening of genomic and cDNA libraries using a probe derived from a gene encoding a ribonuclease stored in the mouse eosinophil secondary granule. This family contains at least 13 genes, which encode ribonucleases, and two potential pseudogenes. The conserved sequence identity among these genes (approximately 70%), as well as the isolation/purification of these ribonucleases from eosinophil secondary granules, has led us to conclude that these genes form a unique clade in the mouse that we have identified as the Ear (Eosinophil-associated ribonuclease) gene family.

Chromatin structure in globozoospermia: a case report.

Sperm nuclear abnormalities in patients with globozoospermia have not been well characterized and may lead to the high rates of fertilization failure and embryo loss reported in patients with this form of teratozoospermia. This study used transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA), and single cell gel eletrophoresis assay (COMET) to assess if globozoospermia is associated with sperm chromatin structure abnormalities, DNA fragmentation, or both. The flow cytometric SCSA measures abnormal chromatin structure based on the susceptibility of sperm nuclear DNA to acid-induced denaturation in situ.

Temporal association between airway hyperresponsiveness and airway eosinophilia in ovalbumin-sensitized mice.

The temporal association between airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) has been analyzed in BALB/c mice sensitized to, and subsequently exposed to, a single intranasal challenge of ovalbumin (OVA). In OVA-sensitized/challenged animals only a small increase in responsiveness to methacholine (MCh) was seen at 8 h, peaked at 24 to 48 h, and resolved by 96 h. An early bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) neutrophil infiltrate (peaking at 8 h postchallenge; approximately 72% total cells was observed) that returned to baseline by 48 h.

DNA damage in patients with untreated cancer as measured by the sperm chromatin structure assay.

Objective: To examine the relationship between sperm chromatin defects, evaluated by sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) and semen characteristics in cryopreserved semen specimens from patients diagnosed with various types of cancer.

Background: Retrograde ejaculation causes < 2% of male infertility but is the leading cause of aspermia. The incidence of retrograde ejaculation is increasing due to the aggressiveness of modern urologic cancer surgery and an increase in diabetes mellitus. Generally, the only adverse effect is on fertility.

Bioequivalence of a newly developed 17 beta-estradiol tablet versus an identical reference formulation.

Two open-label, randomized studies determined the bioequivalence of a test preparation (Prefest) of micronized 17 beta-estradiol (E2, CAS 50-28-2) tablets as compared with a reference preparation of micronized E2 tablets in healthy postmenopausal women. In Study 1, 36 fasting subjects received 4 test preparation 0.5-mg E2 tablets in one period and 4 reference preparation 0.

Eosinophil major basic protein-1 does not contribute to allergen-induced airway pathologies in mouse models of asthma.

The relationship between eosinophils and the development of Ag-induced pulmonary pathologies, including airway hyper-responsiveness, was investigated using mice deficient for the secondary granule component, major basic protein-1 (mMBP-1). The loss of mMBP-1 had no effect on OVA-induced airway histopathologies or inflammatory cell recruitment. Lung function measurements of knockout mice demonstrated a generalized hyporeactivity to methacholine-induced airflow changes (relative to wild type); however, this baseline phenotype was observable only with methacholine; no relative airflow changes were observed in response to another nonspecific stimulus (serotonin).

Laparoscopic removal of a perforated intrauterine device from the perirectal fat.

Background: The intrauterine device (IUD) was a very common form of birth control in the United States. The most serious potential complication of IUD use is uterine perforation. Uterine perforation is common among women with "lost" IUDs and can cause severe morbidity and mortality and should be carefully managed.

Sperm chromatin structure assay parameters as predictors of failed pregnancy following assisted reproductive techniques.

The predictive value of sperm chromatin integrity for pregnancy outcome following in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was studied in 24 men attending a university-based assisted reproductive techniques laboratory using the flow cytometric sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA). The SCSA is a measure of the susceptibility of sperm DNA to low pH-induced denaturation in situ. The mean percentage of spermatozoa in the neat sample demonstrating DNA denaturation was significantly lower in the seven men that initiated a pregnancy (15.

Lack of effect of a high-fat meal on the bioavailability of 17 beta-estradiol/norgestimate in healthy postmenopausal women.

The effect of a high-fat meal on the absorption and pharmacokinetics of 17 beta-estradiol (E2), estrone (E1), estrone sulfate (E1S), and 17-deacetylnorgestimate (17d-NGM) were determined in this two-way complete crossover study of a single dose of E2/NGM (2 mg/180 micrograms) in 24 postmenopausal women. Equal numbers of subjects were randomly assigned to two treatment sequences indicated by the order of fed and fasting treatments. Serial blood samples were collected before and after dosing and assayed using validated methods.

Identification of a new murine eosinophil major basic protein (mMBP) gene: cloning and characterization of mMBP-2.

We have identified a new eosinophil major basic protein gene family member in the mouse and have given it the designation murine major basic protein-2 (mMBP-2). The gene was initially characterized as a unique expressed sequence tag (EST) clone having significant identity to the previously recognized member of this gene family, mMBP-1. The EST was used to screen and isolate mMBP-2 from a bone marrow cDNA library.
