A significant elevation of lipid peroxide levels and of lipid ability to oxidation, paralleled by reduced levels of endogenous antioxidants as against the norm were revealed in the patients with acute disorders of brain circulation with the use of this method. Chemiluminescent studies of lipid peroxidation processes permit monitoring lipid peroxidation reactions and thus obtain a complex of parameters that characterize the status of these processes in the studied system.

Total and cerebral metabolism of catecholamines (CA) was examined in patients with associated chronic hypertonic encephalopathy and extrapyramidal disorders. It was discovered for the first time that there was an increase in noradrenaline in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid together with a lowering of the content of dopamine and major metabolite thereof along the pathway of oxidative deamination of homovanillic acid. CA metabolism was shown to correlate with the patients' age, duration and gravity of extrapyramidal disorders.

Critical conditions that develop because of hypoxia of different genesis are accompanied by endogenous intoxication induced to a considerable degree by the appearance in the blood of an excess amount of medium-sized molecules (MSM). An appreciable increase of the content of MSM was demonstrated since the very first days after the brain stroke as a result of examining 100 patients who suffered brain stroke, including 83 patients during the first week of the disease and 17 patients of the reference group with a history of acute impairment of cerebral circulation which had occurred over a month before. A reverse correlation was established between the level of endogenous intoxication and the clinical status of the patients which could be observed every day during the acute disease phase.

An elevation in cAMP concentrations in the plasma and CSF detected in all the patients was more expressed in cases of a long standing and disseminated process. Using radioimmunoassay the authors studied concentrations of beta-endorphine and metenkephalin in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 65 patients with various diseases of the central nervous system (CNS)--hereditary extrapyramidal disorders, disseminated sclerosis (DS), lateral amyotrophic sclerosis (LAS), spinal tumours, senile dementia, some CNS impairments of inflammatory nature. Patients with spinal tumours showed a 4-14-fold elevation in metenkephalin levels along with a comparatively high content of beta-endorphine. In senile dementia, the concentration of both peptides was lowered.

Parameters of catecholamine and acetylcholine metabolism were investigated in 55 patients with Huntington's chorea. Heterogeneous nature of the results obtained by examining excretion of catecholamines, their precursors, and metabolites appears to reflect varying degrees of the damage to the cerebral neurotransmitter systems and their imbalance in different patients. It is suggested that the level of catecholamine metabolism in the body is genetically determined.
