Aims: Myocardial external efficiency (MEE) is the ratio of cardiac work in relation with energy expenditure. We studied MEE in patients with different aetiologies and stages of heart failure (HF) to discover the role and causes of deranged MEE. In addition, we explored the impact of patient characteristics such as sex, body mass index (BMI), and age on myocardial energetics.

The Scavenger Function of Liver Sinusoidal Endothelial Cells in Health and Disease.

The aim of this review is to give an outline of the blood clearance function of the liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) in health and disease. Lining the hundreds of millions of hepatic sinusoids in the human liver the LSECs are perfectly located to survey the constituents of the blood. These cells are equipped with high-affinity receptors and an intracellular vesicle transport apparatus, enabling a remarkably efficient machinery for removal of large molecules and nanoparticles from the blood, thus contributing importantly to maintain blood and tissue homeostasis.

Blood Lactate AUC Is a Sensitive Test for Evaluating the Effect of Exercise Training on Functional Work Capacity in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure.

Purpose: Exercise training is an essential treatment option for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). However, it remains controversial, which surrogate measures of functional work capacity are most reliable. The purpose of this paper was to compare functional capacity work measured as capillary lactate concentrations area under the curve (AUC) with standard cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) with VO and the 6-minute walk test (6 MWT).

Heterogeneity of Staphylococcus epidermidis in prosthetic joint infections: time to reevaluate microbiological criteria?

Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a feared and challenging to diagnose complication after arthroplasty, with Staphylococcus epidermidis as the major pathogen. One important criteria to define PJI is the detection of phenotypically indistinguishable microorganisms with identical antibiotic susceptibility pattern in at least two different samples. However, owing to phenotypical variation within genetic clones and clonal variation within a phenotype, the criteria may be ambiguous.

Background: Recent advances in the treatment algorithms of early breast cancer have markedly improved overall survival. However, anthracycline- and trastuzumab-associated cardiotoxicity may lead to dose-reduction or halt in potentially life-saving adjuvant cancer therapy. Early initiated neurohormonal blockade may prevent or attenuate the cardiotoxicity-induced reduction in cardiac function, but prior studies have been inconclusive.

Antenatal depressive symptoms in Kenyan women living with HIV: contributions of recent HIV diagnosis, stigma, and partner violence.

Depression among pregnant women living with HIV (WLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa leads to poor pregnancy and HIV outcomes. This cross-sectional analysis utilized enrollment data from a randomized trial (Mobile WAChX, NCT02400671) in six Kenyan public maternal and child health clinics. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), stigma with the Stigma Scale for Chronic Illness, and intimate partner violence (IPV) with the Abuse Assessment Screen.

Improving Quality of PrEP Counseling for Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Kenya With Standardized Patient Actors: A Dose-Response Analysis.

Background: Health care worker (HCW) training using standardized patient actors (SPs) is an evidence-based approach for improving patient-provider interactions. We evaluated whether SP training among HCWs in Western Kenya improved the quality of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) counseling for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).

Methods: We conducted a 2-day SP training intervention among HCWs providing PrEP counseling for AGYW.

Membrane-binding mechanism of the EEA1 FYVE domain revealed by multi-scale molecular dynamics simulations.

Early Endosomal Antigen 1 (EEA1) is a key protein in endosomal trafficking and is implicated in both autoimmune and neurological diseases. The C-terminal FYVE domain of EEA1 binds endosomal membranes, which contain phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate (PI(3)P). Although it is known that FYVE binds PI(3)P specifically, it has not previously been described of how FYVE attaches and binds to endosomal membranes.

Possible misinterpretation of penicillin susceptibility in Staphylococcus aureus blood isolate due to in vitro loss of the blaZ gene.

We describe a case of recurrent catheter-related blood stream infections (BSI) with Staphylococcus aureus, in which the first isolate tested susceptible to penicillin, while subsequent isolates were resistant. Phenotypic susceptibility correlated with the absence/presence of the blaZ gene. The in vitro stability of penicillin resistance was investigated by subculturing single colonies.

Identifying and characterizing pesticide use on 9,000 fields of organic agriculture.

Notwithstanding popular perception, the environmental impacts of organic agriculture, particularly with respect to pesticide use, are not well established. Fueling the impasse is the general lack of data on comparable organic and conventional agricultural fields. We identify the location of ~9,000 organic fields from 2013 to 2019 using field-level crop and pesticide use data, along with state certification data, for Kern County, CA, one of the US' most valuable crop producing counties.

Associations of health-related quality of life with sociodemographic characteristics, health, pain, and lifestyle factors, and motivation for changing lifestyle in adults living with chronic pain: a cross-sectional exploratory study.

Objectives: We investigated the associations between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and health, pain and lifestyle factors, as well as motivation for lifestyle changes, in adults living with chronic pain referred to a Danish pain centre.

Methods: A total of 144 outpatients completed a questionnaire on HRQoL (EQ-5D-5L), health, pain, lifestyle factors (Body Mass Index [BMI], physical activity, smoking, alcohol, physical fitness, eating, sleep and stress) and motivation for lifestyle changes. We used multiple linear regression analyses to assess associations between HRQoL and the independent variables.

Osteopontin as a Regulator of Colorectal Cancer Progression and Its Clinical Applications.

A high expression of the phosphoprotein osteopontin (OPN) has been associated with cancer progression in several tumor types, including breast cancer, hepatocarcinoma, ovarian cancer, and colorectal cancer (CRC). Interestingly, OPN is overexpressed in CRC and is associated with a poor prognosis linked to invasion and metastasis. Here, we review the regulation and functions of OPN with an emphasis on CRC.

GHB analogs confer neuroprotection through specific interaction with the CaMKIIα hub domain.

Ca/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II alpha subunit (CaMKIIα) is a key neuronal signaling protein and an emerging drug target. The central hub domain regulates the activity of CaMKIIα by organizing the holoenzyme complex into functional oligomers, yet pharmacological modulation of the hub domain has never been demonstrated. Here, using a combination of photoaffinity labeling and chemical proteomics, we show that compounds related to the natural substance γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) bind selectively to CaMKIIα.

Histological Analyses of Capsular Contracture and Associated Risk Factors: A Systematic Review.

Background: Capsular contracture is a severe complication to breast surgery with implants. Previous studies suggest multiple risk factors are associated with capsular contracture, but the etiology is still unknown. We performed a literature review to investigate existing studies on histological analyses of breast implant capsules and how clinical risk factors impact the capsule morphology.

Contraceptive Method Mix and HIV Risk Behaviors Among Kenyan Adolescent Girls and Young Women Seeking Family Planning Services: Implications for Integrating HIV Prevention.

Understanding HIV risk behaviors among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) seeking contraception could help inform integrating HIV prevention services within family planning (FP) clinics. From 10/2018 to 04/2019, we conducted a survey at 4 FP clinics in Kisumu, Kenya to evaluate risk behaviors among AGYW without HIV infection seeking contraception. All AGYW aged 15-24 were invited to participate following receipt of FP services.

Skills, competencies, and policies for advanced practice critical care nursing in Europe: A scoping review.

Objectives: Management of critically ill patients is changing due a rise in population age, comorbidity and complexity. To accommodate these changes, the demand is increasing for advanced practice nurses. More knowledge is needed regarding the role of advanced practice critical care nurses in European countries.

Cardiorespiratory fitness and physical performance after childhood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The effects of childhood hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) on key organs can impair cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, and physical performance. We aimed to provide an overview of childhood HSCT survivors' status on these parameters compared with healthy controls and discuss current insights into clinical risk factors. We performed a systematic search in six scientific databases, including studies published before April 2019 and performed a meta-analysis on cardiorespiratory fitness.

Airborne Spread of Methicillin Resistant From a Swine Farm.

Spread of livestock-associated methicillin resistant (LA-MRSA) to farmworkers has been recognized as a risk when working in LA-MRSA positive stables, due to LA-MRSA being present on airborne dust particles. Based on this, airborne spread of LA-MRSA through stable vents is a concern that is addressed in this study. The aim of the investigation was to quantify the airborne spread of LA-MRSA from a MRSA positive swine farm.

Mental health service preferences of patients and providers: a scoping review of conjoint analysis and discrete choice experiments from global public health literature over the last 20 years (1999-2019).

Background: In designing, adapting, and integrating mental health interventions, it is pertinent to understand patients' needs and their own perceptions and values in receiving care. Conjoint analysis (CA) and discrete choice experiments (DCEs) are survey-based preference-elicitation approaches that, when applied to healthcare settings, offer opportunities to quantify and rank the healthcare-related choices of patients, providers, and other stakeholders. However, a knowledge gap exists in characterizing the extent to which DCEs/CA have been used in designing mental health services for patients and providers.

Binding of Ca-independent C2 domains to lipid membranes: A multi-scale molecular dynamics study.

C2 domains facilitate protein interactions with lipid bilayers in either a Ca-dependent or -independent manner. We used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore six Ca-independent C2 domains, from KIBRA, PI3KC2α, RIM2, PTEN, SHIP2, and Smurf2. In coarse-grained MD simulations these C2 domains formed transient interactions with zwitterionic bilayers, compared with longer-lived interactions with anionic bilayers containing phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP).

Taste alterations and oral discomfort in patients receiving chemotherapy.

Purpose: Taste alterations (TA) and oral discomfort in cancer patients are neglected side effects of the disease and treatments. They contribute to poor appetite, decrease food intake and affect quality of life, leading to adverse outcomes such as malnutrition and depression. The study aimed to explore TAs in relation to other oral conditions causing discomfort in cancer patients.

Enhanced Impact Strength of Recycled PET/Glass Fiber Composites.

In this paper, we report a study on the effects of different ethylene copolymers in improving the impact strength of a fiber-reinforced composite based on a recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (rPET) from post-consumer bottles. Different ethylene copolymers have been selected in order to evaluate the effects of the polar co-monomer chemical structure and content. The composite mixtures were prepared via melt extrusion, and the samples were manufactured by injection molding.
