Importance: The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) evaluated the effectiveness of the Communities That HEAL (CTH) intervention in preventing fatal overdoses amidst the US opioid epidemic.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of the CTH intervention on total drug overdose deaths and overdose deaths involving combinations of opioids with psychostimulants or benzodiazepines.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This randomized clinical trial was a parallel-arm, multisite, community-randomized, open, and waitlisted controlled comparison trial of communities in 4 US states between 2020 and 2023.

Estimating the survival probability of animals released from fisheries can improve the overall understanding of animal biology with implications for fisheries management, conservation and animal welfare. Vitality indicators are simple visual measures of animal condition that change in response to stressors (like fisheries capture) and can be assessed to predict post-release survival. These indicators typically include immediate reflex responses which are typically combined into a score.

Objective: Research cannot advance without the voluntary participation of human participants.

Summary Of Arguments: Full participation of research participants is often restrained by the traditional research framework, which relegates them to a predefined participant role and allows them only quasi-scripted opportunities to contribute to research processes and outcomes. Terms commonly used to refer to research participants do not reflect their significant role or send a clear message about their value.

Article Synopsis
  • High-pressure injection injuries to the hand are under-researched and can result in severe outcomes; this study aims to gather data on their incidence and demographics from emergency department visits between 2012 and 2021.
  • Approximately 15,307 cases were identified, with highest injury rates occurring on weekends and during late spring/summer months, particularly in May.
  • Paint-related injection injuries have a significantly higher infection rate compared to those from pressure washers, which are more common; highlighting the importance of awareness and safety techniques for users of pressure washers.*

Objective: Timely data on drug overdose deaths can help identify community needs, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, and allocate resources. We identified variations in death investigation and reporting systems within and between states that affect the timeliness and accuracy of death certificate information.

Methods: The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) is a community-engaged, data-driven approach to combating the opioid crisis in 67 communities in 4 states: Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio.

Bicycle utilization continues to increase annually, and this trend was recently accelerated by the coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic. There is limited epidemiologic data, however, regarding the prevalence and nature of bicycle-related injuries. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to characterize trends in bicycle-related injuries.

Introduction: Seasonal media reports often describe the dangers of pumpkin carving, yet little data exists regarding the actual incidence of hand injuries resulting from pumpkin carving. The purpose of this study is to describe, quantify, and trend ED encounters associated with pumpkin-related knife injuries.

Methods: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for pumpkin-related knife injuries from 2012 to 2021.

Background: This study aimed to identify individual- and county-level inequalities that may underlie disparities in drug overdose mortality for Hispanic men in Massachusetts and the broader Northeast region.

Methods: The study first used data from the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System to compare the 635 Hispanic and 3593 Non-Hispanic (NH) White men who died of unintentional/undetermined opioid-related overdoses in Massachusetts in 2016-2018. Next, the study used 2015-2019 data from the Multiple Cause of Death online platform to: a) compare rates of drug overdose mortality in Hispanic versus NH White men in 54 counties in the Northeast United States; and b) examine associations with inequalities in poverty, educational attainment, unemployment, and uninsurance (from 2015-2019 American Community Survey data).

Objectives: Studies describing linkage of ambulance trips and emergency department (ED) visits of patients with opioid-related overdose (ORO) are limited. We linked records of patients experiencing ORO from ambulance trip and ED visit records in Massachusetts during April 1-June 30, 2017.

Methods: We estimated the positive predictive value of ORO-capturing definitions by examining the narratives and triage notes of a sample of OROs from each data source.

We describe our full report of the catalytic asymmetric addition of simple and functionalized dialkylzinc reagents to a broad range of saturated ketones and enones. The functionalized organozinc reagents contain esters, silyl ethers, alkyl chlorides, and alkyl bromides. In general, the resulting tertiary alcohol products are isolated with high ee's.

Many catalysts will promote the asymmetric addition of alkylzinc reagents to aldehydes. In contrast, there are no reports of additions to ketones that are both general and highly enantioselective. We describe herein a practical catalytic asymmetric addition of ethyl groups to ketones.

Experimental tardive dyskinesia.

Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry

April 1983

In this work, we have attempted to reproduce dyskinesia similar to tardive dyskinesia by two methods. In the first experiment, we have administered to 6 macaca mulatta, haloperidol 0.25 mg/kg daily for six months.

Parkinsonian postural tremor and rigidity most likely involve the disruption of the dopaminergic (DA) nigrostriatal mechanisms and the corresponding rubro-olivo-cerebello-rubral loop without excluding the involvement of related dentato-rubral and dentato-thalamic nervous fascicles. The integrity of the magnocellular division of the red nucleus and of the rubrotegmentospinal pathway, however, is apparently essential for the expression of rigidity. Akinesia most likely results from the bilateral involvement of brain stem catecholaminergic (CA) mechanisms including the DA nigrostriatal pathways.

Postural or Parkinson-like tremor, which results from the impairment of mechanisms which are predominantly lateralized in the brain, is most likely related to the combined impairment of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal pathway and the corresponding rubro-olivo-cerebello-rubral loop (without excluding the possiblity that other nervous mechanisms interconnected with these structures may represent an alternative disturbance). The integrity of the internal division of the pallidum and the ventrolateral area of the thalamus and their efferent fibers as well as the motor cortex and certain of its cortico-subcortico-spinal pathways (Figures 1 and 2) is apparently an essential feature for the elaboration of the rhythmic bursts associated with the appearance of postural tremor. The integrity of the spinal sensory roots and the rubro-tegmentospinal tract is not a prerequisite for the expression of postural tremor, a condition which seems essential for the production of rigidity.
