Background: Observational studies using real-world data (RWD) can address gaps in knowledge on deprescribing medications but are subject to methodological issues. Limited data exist on the methods employed to use RWD to measure the effects of deprescribing.
Objective: To describe methodological approaches used in observational studies of deprescribing medications in older adults.
Background: A growing body of literature classifies autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a heterogeneous, complex neurodevelopmental disorder that often is identified prior to three years of age. We aim to provide a narrative review of key structural and functional properties that differentiate the neuroimaging profile of autistic youth from their typically developing (TD) peers across different neuroimaging modalities.
Methods: Relevant studies were identified by searching for key terms in PubMed, with the most recent search conducted on September 1, 2023.
Background: By recovering data in an ordered manner and at the right time, clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) are designed to help healthcare professionals make decisions that improve patient care.
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to translate the REMEDI[e]s tool's explicit criteria, France's first reference list of potentially inappropriate drugs for the elderly, into seminatural language, in order to implement these criteria as alert rules and then enable their computer coding in a CDSS.
Methods: This work was carried out at Lille University Hospital by a team of clinical pharmacists with expertise in the use of pharmaceutical decision support systems, in collaboration with the authors of the REMEDI[e]s tool.
Low-velocity orbital penetrating injuries may result in an intracranial retained foreign body that requires surgical removal. We describe the endoscopic transorbital removal of a retained umbrella tip in the frontal lobe, which was secondary to trauma to the orbital roof. This technique facilitated the complete removal of the foreign body without causing additional damage to the surrounding tissue.

Male mosquitoes, on the other hand, are thought to rely exclusively on plant sugars for their energetic needs; indeed, this dichotomy is one of the central tenets of medical entomology. Here, we show that male and mosquitoes will readily take blood from a membrane feeder when reared under dehydration conditions with no toxic effects.

Methods: A partial economic evaluation from the viewpoint of French public health insurance was performed, based on a previous pharmacovigilance study (IATROSTAT) performed in 2018 in public hospital medical units.
Ependymomas are rare nervous system tumors that can arise anywhere in the neuraxis. While having a high propensity for leptomeningeal dissemination, retrograde dissemination (from the spine to the CNS) remains infrequent. We describe the case of a 31-year-old female who presented with hydrocephalus secondary to an intracranial leptomeningeal metastasis of a giant spinal ependymoma with mixed (classic and myxopapillary) histopathologic features, successfully treated with surgical resection and radiotherapy of the entire neuraxis.

Background: General practitioners (GPs) have a central role to play on reduction of polypharmacy and deprescribing. This study aimed to assess beliefs and attitudes towards deprescribing in patients, aged 65 years or older in primary care, and to identify factors associated with deprescribing and their willingness to stop medication.
Methods: A questionnaire study was performed between 23 May and 29 July 2022 on patients aged 65 years or older attending a GP's surgery in a French area.
Background: We quantified SARS-CoV-2 dynamics in different community settings and the direct and indirect effect of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in Monaco for different variants of concern (VOC).
Methods: Between July 2021 and September 2022, we prospectively investigated 20,443 contacts from 6320 index cases using data from the Monaco COVID-19 Public Health Programme. We calculated secondary attack rates (SARs) in households (n = 13,877), schools (n = 2508) and occupational (n = 6499) settings.
Aims: The global older population is growing rapidly, and the rise in polypharmacy has increased potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) encounters. PIMs pose health risks, but detecting them automatically in large medical databases is complex. This review aimed to uncover PIM prevalence in individuals aged 65 years or older using health databases and emphasized the risk of underestimating PIM prevalence due to underutilization of detection tools.

We have developed an ultra-low noise tunable Brillouin fiber laser exhibiting three orders of magnitude better frequency noise performance than the Neodymium-doped fiber laser pump and remarkable optical signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 80 dB suitable for immediate applications in coherent nonlinear conversion, quantum computing and underwater communications. In addition, we have implemented a custom optical phase-locked loop to ensure long-term stable operation and have investigated its impact on frequency noise. We demonstrate the power scalability of the single frequency (Hz-class) Brillouin laser, delivering over 500 mW with tunability across the 900 nm to 930 nm range in an all-fiber fully polarization-maintaining architecture.

Background: The revised Patients' Attitudes Towards Deprescribing (rPATD) questionnaire explores older adults' views on deprescribing in general. Those views may differ, however, when the target is a specific drug such as benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BZRA).
Objective: This study aimed to adapt the 22-item French rPATD questionnaire to create a BZRA-specific instrument and to assess the psychometric properties of this new tool.
We report an efficient deep-UV master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser system at 229 nm that generates 350 ps pulses at 2 MHz repetition rate with an average power of 1.2 W. The use of a polarization-maintaining large mode area neodymium-doped fiber operating on the F→I transition allows high-power laser emission of up to 28 W near 915 nm in the sub-nanosecond regime with low spectral broadening.
