The first part of this review highlighted the evolving landscape of atherosclerosis, noting emerging cardiometabolic risk factors, the growing impact of exposomes, and social determinants of health. The prominent role of atherosclerosis in the bidirectional relationship between cardiovascular disease and cancer was also discussed. In this second part, we examine the complex interplay between multimorbid cardio-oncologic patients, cardiometabolic risk factors, and the harmful environments that lend a "syndemic" nature to these chronic diseases.

The presence of metastatic cancer represents a high-risk condition for the treatment of heart disease requiring surgical or percutaneous procedures. We present the case of a 58-year-old man with pulmonary adenocarcinoma and renal metastases surviving more than 3 years after chemotherapy and immunotherapy suffering dyspnea and chest pain on minimal exertion due to 99% anterior coronary artery stenosis associated with severe aortic stenosis of a bicuspid valve. We treated the cardiac lesions in two steps by coronary angioplasty with drug-eluting stent implantation followed by percutaneous prosthetic aortic valve replacement.

The hydrophobic effect is the main factor that drives the folding of polypeptide chains. In this study, we have examined the influence of the hydrophobic effect in the context of the main mechanical forces approach, mainly in relation to the establishment of specific interplays, such as hydrophobic and CH-π cloud interactions. By adopting three oligopeptides as model systems to assess folding features, we demonstrate herein that these finely tuned interactions dominate over electrostatic interactions, including H-bonds and electrostatic attractions/repulsions.

Variational quantum computing schemes train a loss function by sending an initial state through a parametrized quantum circuit, and measuring the expectation value of some operator. Despite their promise, the trainability of these algorithms is hindered by barren plateaus (BPs) induced by the expressiveness of the circuit, the entanglement of the input data, the locality of the observable, or the presence of noise. Up to this point, these sources of BPs have been regarded as independent.

Ischaemia-reperfusion (IR)-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe clinical condition that lacks effective pharmacological treatments. Our recent research revealed that pretreatment with the angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R) agonist C21 alleviates kidney damage during IR. Primary cilia are organelles crucial for regulation of epithelial cell homeostasis, which are significantly affected by IR injury.

Isoprenyl cysteine carboxyl methyltransferase (ICMT) catalyzes the last step of the prenylation pathway. Previously, we found that high ICMT levels enhance tumorigenesis in vivo and that its expression is repressed by the p53 tumor suppressor. Based on evidence suggesting that some ICMT substrates affect invasive traits, we wondered if this enzyme may promote metastasis.

The prospect of achieving quantum advantage with quantum neural networks (QNNs) is exciting. Understanding how QNN properties (for example, the number of parameters M) affect the loss landscape is crucial to designing scalable QNN architectures. Here we rigorously analyze the overparametrization phenomenon in QNNs, defining overparametrization as the regime where the QNN has more than a critical number of parameters M allowing it to explore all relevant directions in state space.

Introduction: Lifetime and past-year alcohol use disorder (AUD) prevalence is significantly higher in US Armed Services Veterans than in non-veterans across adulthood. This study examined the associations of perceived transformational leadership styles (TLS) experienced during military service and anhedonic depression and self-efficacy related to confidence to abstain or reduce alcohol consumption in Veterans seeking treatment for AUD. The ramifications of perceived leadership styles on multiple aspects of follower psychiatric functioning, including depressive and PTSD symptomatology, during and after military service, may be substantial and enduring.

As leaders across organizational contexts continue to face volatile and often stressful environments, a greater understanding of the psychological underpinnings of the motivation to lead (MTL) in challenging circumstances is needed. Based on a sample of 242 cadets holding leadership positions in a military college, we utilized a distal and proximal conceptualization of MTL to test achievement values, grit, and psychological capital (PsyCap) as antecedents to the three factors of MTL. Controlling for gender, prior leadership positions, and leader tenure, regression modeling revealed grit and achievement values to be positively associated with affective/identity MTL, while PsyCap was positively associated with all three MTL factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer metastasis makes treatment less effective, highlighting the need for reliable markers to detect its onset.
  • The 65 kDa isoform of MMP-9 is suggested as a better biomarker than the more commonly referenced 82 kDa form, as it becomes more active during the progression of diseases like lung and breast cancer.
  • Targeting the enzymes that convert the 82 kDa MMP-9 into the active 65 kDa form might lead to new treatments that can effectively prevent metastasis.

During ischemic acute kidney injury (AKI), loss of cytoskeletal integrity and disruption of intercellular junctions are rapid events in response to ATP depletion. Angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R) is overexpressed in injury situations and its stimulation by angiotensin II (AngII) is related to beneficial renal effects. Its role on ischemic AKI has not been deeply studied.

In this study, we addressed an important drawback of our previously reported tetraplatinated (metallo)porphyrin-based photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic therapy (PDT), namely, the poor solubility in aqueous media. We aimed to create tetraplatinated porphyrin-based PSs that are soluble in aqueous media modified with polysorbate (Tween) and do not need to be pre-dissolved in organic solvents. A structural optimization of the previously reported PSs resulted in the synthesis of an extremely potent novel porphyrin-based PS.

Isothiocyanates (ITCs), present as glucosinolate precursors in cruciferous vegetables, have shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic activities. Here, we compared the effects of three different ITCs on ROS production and on the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9, which represent important pathogenetic factors of various neurological diseases. Primary cultures of rat astrocytes were activated by LPS and simultaneously treated with different doses of Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), 2-Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) and 2-Sulforaphane (SFN).
