Shiga toxin-producing (STEC) is a group of bacteria that causes gastrointestinal illness and occasionally causes large foodborne outbreaks. It represents a major public health concern due to its ability to cause severe illness which can sometimes be fatal. This study was undertaken as part of a rapid investigation into a national foodborne outbreak of STEC O145.

Effects of a telehealth-delivered Mediterranean diet intervention in adults with Rheumatoid Arthritis (MEDRA): a randomised controlled trial.

Objective: To compare the effects a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) versus the Irish Healthy Eating Guidelines (HEG) on physical function and quality of life in adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Ireland.

Methods: Forty-four adults with RA were randomised (1:1) to the MedDiet or HEG for 12 weeks. The intervention included three video teleconsultations and two follow-up telephone calls facilitated by a Registered Dietitian (RD).

In September 2023, the UK Health Security Agency identified cases of Saintpaul distributed across England, Scotland, and Wales, all with very low genetic diversity. Additional cases were identified in Portugal following an alert raised by the United Kingdom. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of people with RA of participating in an exercise intervention to improve their sleep.

Methods: Using a qualitative descriptive design, semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with 12 people with RA who had completed an 8-week walking-based exercise intervention to improve their total sleep time, sleep quality and sleep disturbance. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.

The impact of COVID-19 on clinical research: the PIPPRA and MEDRA experience.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a significant impact on clinical research. This paper aims to provide an insight into how the COVID-19 pandemic, associated public health restrictions and international guidance on the conduct of clinical research impacted two clinical rheumatology research trials - the Physiotherapist-led Intervention to Promote Physical Activity in Rheumatoid Arthritis (PIPPRA) and the MEDiterranean diet in Rheumatoid Arthritis (MEDRA) projects.

Methods: The March 2019 public health restrictions imposed to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 occurred at a time when PIPPRA was in the process of delivering assessment and intervention on a face-to-face basis (n=48) and MEDRA had commenced recruitment.

A genomic cluster of Braenderup ST22, a serovar of subsp. which causes symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, was notified by Danish authorities to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on 3 May 2021. By 6 July 2021, Braenderup outbreak cases (n = 348) had been reported from 12 countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) and the United Kingdom (UK), including 68 hospitalised cases.

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) is the loss of skeletal muscle that exceeds the muscle's self-repair mechanism and leads to permanent functional deficits. In a previous study, we demonstrated the ability of our scaffold-free, multiphasic, tissue-engineered skeletal muscle units (SMUs) to restore muscle mass and force production. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted governments internationally to consider strengthening their public health systems. To support the work of Ireland's Public Health Reform Expert Advisory Group, the Health Information and Quality Authority, an independent governmental agency, was asked to describe the lessons learnt regarding the public health response to COVID-19 internationally and the applicability of this response for future pandemic preparedness.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews with key public health representatives from nine countries were conducted.

Tissue engineering of exogenous skeletal muscle units (SMUs) through isolation of muscle satellite cells from muscle biopsies is a potential treatment method for acute volumetric muscle loss (VML). A current issue with this treatment process is the limited capacity for muscle stem cell (satellite cell) expansion in cell culture, resulting in a decreased ability to obtain enough cells to fabricate SMUs of appropriate size and structural quality and that produce native levels of contractile force. This study determined the impact of human recombinant irisin on the growth and development of three-dimensional (3D) engineered skeletal muscle.

Engineered Tissue Graft for Repair of Injured Infraspinatus Rotator Cuff Tendon.

Rotator cuff tears constitute a vast majority of shoulder-related injuries, occurring in a wide population range and increasing in incidence with age. Current treatments for full thickness tears use suture to secure the ruptured tendon back to its native attachment site and often retear due to improper enthesis regeneration. To reduce the occurrence of retear, our laboratory developed an engineered tendon graft for rotator cuff repair (ETG-RC) to serve as an underlayment to traditional suture repair.

A coral reef system at the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, CA, USA experienced a population explosion of pycnogonid sea spiders (Arthropoda: Class Pycnogonida) with subsequent deleterious health effects on the corals in the system. Experience and perceptions among rheumatoid arthritis patients following a telehealth-delivered dietary intervention: a qualitative study.

The effects of dietary modifications have been assessed in people living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with consistent benefits reported from clinical trials. However, the lived experience of making and sustaining positive dietary changes for people with RA remains unknown. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of adults with RA and their perceptions of a 12-week telehealth-delivered dietary intervention and to assess the acceptability of the programme.

We report a 5-single nucleotide polymorphism cluster of Enteriditis in England, part of a global cluster of Enteritidis ST11. Forty-seven confirmed cases have been investigated of whom 25 were linked to a restaurant. In addition, there were 18 probable cases with restaurant exposure.
