Carotid-Threatening Penetrating Oropharyngeal Trauma in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Penetrating oropharyngeal injury is a relatively common occurrence in pediatric patients; however, cases involving close proximity to critical vascular structures, such as the internal carotid artery (ICA), are exceedingly rare and pose significant risks. This case report describes a seven-year-old male who sustained penetrating oropharyngeal trauma with startling proximity to the ICA after being pushed into a locker with a pencil in his mouth. Initial evaluation showed the wooden pencil protruding from the soft palate without active bleeding.

Nasopharyngeal Dermoid Requiring a Unilateral Tonsillectomy at Day Three of Age.

Nasopharyngeal dermoid tumors, or hairy polyps, are rare benign congenital malformations of bigerminal origin with both ectodermal and mesodermal elements. It is often seen in the neonatal period and can lead to respiratory distress and/or feeding disorders. Tonsillectomy is defined as a surgical procedure that completely removes the tonsil, including its capsule, by dissecting the peritonsillar space between the tonsil capsule and muscular wall.

Comparison of steroid-releasing stents vs nonabsorbable packing as middle meatal spacers.

Background: A randomized controlled trial was held to compare nonabsorbable packs to steroid-eluting absorbable stents as middle meatal spacers after endoscopic sinus surgery in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).

Methods: CRS patients were randomly assigned to receive either nonabsorbable Merocel packs wrapped in non-latex glove material (packing type A) or Propel steroid eluting stents (packing type B). Twenty-two-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) scores were collected preoperatively and postoperatively during the initial 4 debridements up to 3 months.

The Efficacy of Mitomycin C in the Treatment of Laryngotracheal Stenosis: Results and Experiences with a Difficult Disease Entity.

Background/aims: Laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) is a difficult entity to treat, with many patients requiring multiple procedures. Our study assessed the efficacy of mitomycin C (MMC) application as complimentary treatment of LTS.
