A theoretical model for respirator cartridge service life for binary systems: application to acetone/styrene mixtures.

A theoretical model, developed previously to assess respirator cartridge service life, was applied to various acetone/styrene binary assault systems. Experimental data, collected for several binary mixtures differing only with respect to the concentration of each of the two compounds, were interpreted in terms of the model. Styrene concentrations varied from 228 to 1578 ppm; the range of acetone concentrations was 92-985 ppm.

Calbindin D-28k-positive neurons in the rat olfactory bulb. An immunohistochemical study.

We have studied the distribution of calbindin D-28k immunoreactivity in the rat olfactory bulb using specific monoclonal antibodies and the avidin-biotin-immunoperoxidase method. The largest number of positive neurons was located in the periglomerular layer. These neurons were identified as periglomerular cells; they have been described also by other authors as calbindin-positive elements.

Specific oligosaccharide form of the Rhizobium meliloti exopolysaccharide promotes nodule invasion in alfalfa.

Rhizobium meliloti strain SU47 produces both high molecular weight (HMW) and low molecular weight (LMW) forms of an acidic exopolysaccharide, succinoglycan. Genetic studies have shown that succinoglycan is required for alfalfa root nodule invasion. We found that LMW succinoglycan, when applied exogenously to alfalfa roots, restored nodule invasion to exoA, exoB, exoF, and exoH mutants.

[A mid-term clinical and hemodynamic evaluation of the Wessex and Hancock II bioprostheses].

The purpose of this study is to compare clinically and hemodynamically the Wessex and Hancock II porcine bioprostheses. We compared functional class and data from echo-Doppler in 34 Wessex bioprostheses (group A) with those in 42 Hancock II bioprostheses (group B). We subdivided group A into A1 and A2.

Distribution of enkephalin-like immunoreactivity in the central nervous system of the rainbow trout: an immunocytochemical study.

The distribution of enkephalin-like immunoreactive (ELI) cell bodies and fibres in the brain of the teleost Salmo gairdneri L. was demonstrated with the indirect peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunocytochemical technique using a highly specific antiserum. In the telencephalon, ELI cell bodies were located in the area ventralis.

Carcinosarcoma of the submandibular salivary gland. Immunohistochemical findings.

Carcinosarcomas of the salivary glands are rare lesions that generally have been associated with benign mixed tumors. The authors report a case of a submandibular gland lesion, which occurred in a 64-year-old man, that was composed of intermingled ductal type adenocarcinoma and osteogenic sarcoma with a large component of osteoclast-like giant cells. The local recurrence of the tumor was entirely sarcomatous with no epithelial component observed.

Parvalbumin immunoreactive neurons and fibres in the teleost cerebellum.

The distribution of parvalbumin- (PV) immunopositive cell bodies and fibres in the cerebellum of two species of freshwater teleosts (Salmo gairdneri and Barbus meridonalis) was studied using a monoclonal antibody and the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase technique. A clear laminated pattern of PV immunoreactivity was observed. After PV-immunostaining, Purkinje cells were strongly labelled in their cell bodies, the initial segments of the axons and the dendritic trees.

An atlas of the brain of the tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758; Cyprinidae, Teleostei).

This report provides an atlas of the tench brain in the transverse plane. The brain atlas is based on paraffin-embedded brains which are serially sectioned and stained with cresyl violet. It consists of drawings and photographs at several levels throughout the main divisions of the tench brain.

DNA stainability in aneuploid breast tumors: comparison of four DNA fluorochromes differing in binding properties.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether or not the differences in chromatin structure between diploid stromal cells or lymphocytes, which are often used as DNA ploidy standard, and aneuploid breast tumor cells can significantly affect the estimates of the DNA index of these tumors. To this end, the DNA content estimates of 34 aneuploid breast tumors, differing in size, degree of differentiation, and presence or absence of estrogen and progesterone receptors and metastases, were compared using four common DNA fluorochromes: DAPI, Hoechst 33342, propidium iodide, and acridine orange. These dyes differ in their mode of interaction with DNA (binding to minor groove or intercalation) and for each of them binding to DNA is restricted to a different degree by nuclear proteins.

Endogenous vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) regulates somatostatin secretion by cultured fetal rat cerebral cortical and hypothalamic cells.

To determine the possible physiological role of endogenous vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the control of cerebral somatostatin (SS), we studied the effect of endogenous VIP blockade on immunoreactive SS (IR-SS) accumulation by fetal rat cerebral cortical and hypothalamic cells in culture. Cells were cultured in minimum essential medium (MEM) with 10% fetal calf serum and 10% horse serum. After 7-10 days 'in vitro' media were replaced with MEMs without sera containing anti-VIP immunoglobulins G (IgG) for 1, 3, 6, 24 or 48 h.

The densest clusters of immunoreactive perikarya were observed in the nuclei ventralis posterior, reticularis, ventralis anterior and zona incerta, whereas the nuclei habenularis lateralis, lateralis posterior, lateralis, centralis lateralis and ventralis lateralis had the lowest density.

Ruffed cells in the olfactory bulb of freshwater teleosts. II. A Golgi/EM study of the ruff.

The morphological characteristics of the synaptic contacts in the ruff of the cichlid fish Hemichromis bimaculatus were studies using the combined Golgi-electron microscope technique. Ruffed cells were located in the glomerular and plexiform layers and exhibited a pyriform or round cell body and numerous thin dendritic branches that were highly ramified. Four different segments could be distinguished on the initial portion of the axon (IP) according to the number and density of protrusions.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis in a bronchial carcinoid tumor. An unusual complication of agnogenic myeloid metaplasia.

A case of bronchial carcinoid tumor with foci of extramedullary hematopoiesis is presented. The patient had a 6-year history of agnogenic myeloid metaplasia and hepatosplenomegaly. All three hematopoietic cell lines were represented in different areas of the bronchial tumor.

Hypofibrinolysis associated with vasculopathy in non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

The pathogenesis of diabetic vasculopathy has been related to modifications in hemostasis and fibrinolysis. 50 non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus patients have been studied. Euglobulin clot lysis time, fibrin plate, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) activity, Protein C and S, cholesterol, triglycerides and Hb A1c were determined in blood samples.

Hemodynamic, platelet and clinical responses to prostacyclin in unstable angina pectoris.

The hemodynamic and platelet effects of prostacyclin (PGI2) were investigated in 27 patients with unstable angina (14 treated patients; 13 control subjects) given a 72-hour infusion (5 ng/kg/min) or placebo. This randomized study was double-blind and conducted as a substudy of a multicenter trial testing the clinical efficacy of PGI2. The clinical and angiographic features were identical in the 2 groups.

Regeneration of the retinotectal system in a flatfish, Scophthalmus maximus L.

Regenerating retinotectal fibres were visualized by radioautography in turbots (Scophthalmus maximus L.) maintained at 10 degrees-14 degrees C either after crushing one optic nerve or after crushing one nerve and removing the contralateral eye. Regeneration was found to be more extensive 2 days after crushing the right optic nerve than after crushing the left and was further enhanced by contralateral enucleation.

PV-immunoreactive neurons were mainly located in the medial septum/diagonal band complex and in the horizontal limb of the diagonal band of Broca, showing a high density of heavily immunostained neurons and fibers. Nonimmunoreactive cells surrounded by PV-positive cells and processes were observed in the same region, but no pericellular basket-like arrangements were found.

The distribution of substance P-like (SP) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like (VIP) structures was studied using an indirect immunoperoxidase technique in the mediterranean barbel Barbus meridionalis and in the rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri. SP-like positive fibers were observed in the inner strata of the mediterranean barbel olfactory bulb, mainly the granule cell and the plexiform layers. Ganglion cells and fibers of the terminal nerve were also labeled.

[Aortic stenosis with left ventricular systolic dysfunction: a severe disease but with good surgical prognosis].

From our series of 72 patients with severe valvular aortic stenosis, we identified 19 showing features of left ventricular systolic disfunction (ventriculographic ejection fraction less than 55% and/or fractional shortening less than 30% at M-mode echocardiography).
