Identification of biomarkers representing the cognitive status of PLWHA is a critical step for implementation of successful cognitive, behavioral and pharmacological strategies to prevent onset and progression of HAND. However, the presence of co-morbidity factors in PLWHA, the most common being substance abuse, can prevent the identification of such biomarkers.

Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Acceptance-Based Behavior Therapy to Promote HIV Acceptance, HIV Disclosure, and Retention in Medical Care.

Numerous interventions have been tested to improve retention, but they are limited by their resource-intensive approaches and lack of focus on new patients, who are at highest risk for drop-out. Data show that acceptance and disclosure of HIV status might impact retention, yet these variables have not been targeted in previous interventions.

Although antigen presentation can be mediated by autophagy, here we demonstrate a pathway for mitochondrial antigen presentation (MitAP) that relies on the generation and trafficking of mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs) rather than on autophagy/mitophagy. We find that PINK1 and Parkin, two mitochondrial proteins linked to Parkinson's disease (PD), actively inhibit MDV formation and MitAP.

Advancing Behavioral HIV Prevention: Adapting an Evidence-Based Intervention for People Living with HIV and Alcohol Use Disorders.

Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are highly prevalent among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and are associated with increased HIV risk behaviors, suboptimal treatment adherence, and greater risk for disease progression. We used the ADAPT-ITT strategy to adapt an evidence-based intervention (EBI), the Holistic Health Recovery Program (HHRP+), that focuses on secondary HIV prevention and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and apply it to PLWHA with problematic drinking. Focus groups (FGs) were conducted with PLWHA who consume alcohol and with treatment providers at the largest HIV primary care clinic in New Orleans, LA.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-infected individuals are at increased risk for developing neurocognitive disorders and depression. These conditions collectively affect more than 50% of people living with HIV/AIDS and adversely impact adherence to HIV therapy. Thus, identification of early markers of neurocognitive impairment could lead to interventions that improve psychosocial functioning and slow or reverse disease progression through improved treatment adherence.

A modulated photoacoustic spectroscopy study on the effect of dihydroxyacetone, commonly used for artificial tan, is presented. The study was carried out in the presence and absence of dimethylisosorbide (a solvent for dihydroxyacetone) on fresh human skin, obtained from the breast region of recent autopsy cases (two females), at a frequency of 25 Hz, which enabled us to study the effect at a depth of 30 microm in the stratum corneum and beneath. By monitoring the photoacoustic signal intensity with time in the region of 300-400 nm, which is a specific region for melanin pigment, it is demonstrated that dihydroxyacetone in combination with dimethylisosorbide enhances the process of tanning.
