The novel SARS-CoV-2 introduced several new inflammatory conditions including SARS-CoV-2-associated rhabdomyolysis and viral myositis. We present a 22-year-old man who noted a week of cough followed by myalgias, dark-colored urine, and decreased oral intake. He was found to have acute nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis after an acutely positive SARS-CoV-2 test.

A Morel-Lavallee lesion (MLL) is a rare internal denudement injury of skin and hypodermis from deep fascia, usually occurring hours to days after an inciting trauma. A common location is the pelvis or thigh where there is prominent vascularization and may mimic diagnoses such as deep vein thrombosis or contusion. Fluid collections that persist despite conservative management require surgical intervention and frequent and prolonged hospitalizations as in this case of a patient with a persistent MLL.

Within the United States (US) medical system, diversity in healthcare is a growing concern although studies have shown improved patient outcomes when healthcare teams are diverse. We were interested in cardiology-related fellowships from internal medicine and surgical specialties to understand how females, osteopaths (DOs), and non-US graduates were represented compared to males, allopathic medical doctors (MD), and US-graduated peers. We obtained data about accredited cardiology fellowship programs from the Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access System (FRIEDA™) for 2022-2023 and determined statistical significance for male/female, DO/MD, and US/non-US graduate status by reviewing program sites.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are life-threatening spectrum diseases in which a medication triggers a mucocutaneous reaction associated with severe necrosis and loss of epidermal integrity. The disease has a high mortality rate that can be assessed by dermatology scoring scales based on an affected total body surface area (TBSA). Sloughing of <10% TBSA is considered SJS, with a mortality of 10%.

Environmental arsenic exposure in adults and children has been associated with a reduction in the expression of club cell secretory protein (CC16) and an increase in the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), both biomarkers of lung inflammation and negative respiratory outcomes. The objectives of this study were to determine if the levels of serum CC16 and MMP-9 and subsequent respiratory infections in children are associated with the ingestion of arsenic by drinking water. Lung cancer is the most common neoplasm and the primary cause-related mortality in developed and in most of nondeveloped countries. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that even at low arsenic doses, the lungs are one of the main target organs and that chronic arsenic exposure has been associated with an increase in lung cancer development. Among the risk factors for cancer, arsenic methylation efficiency (As3MT) and the clearance of arsenic from cells by two members of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family (multidrug resistance protein 1 [MRP1] and P-glycoprotein [P-gp]) play an important role in processing of arsenic and decreasing its intracellular levels.

Human calcitonin (hCT) is a 32-residue peptide hormone that can aggregate into amyloid fibrils and cause cellular toxicity. In this study, we investigated the inhibition effects of a group of polyphenolic molecules on hCT amyloid formation. Our results suggest that the gallate moiety in epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a well-recognized amyloid inhibitor, is not critical for its inhibition function in the hCT amyloid formation.

Human calcitonin (hCT) is a 32-residue peptide that aggregates to form amyloid fibrils under appropriate conditions. In this study, we investigated the effect of the intramolecular disulfide bond formed at the N-terminal region of the peptide in the aggregation kinetics of hCT. Our results indicate that the presence of the disulfide bond in hCT plays a crucial role in forming the critical nucleus needed for fibril formation, facilitating the rate of hCT amyloidogenesis.
