A Retrospective Study on the Effects of Kinesiology Taping on Edema of the Lower Limb in 14 Patients Following Intramedullary Nailing for Femoral Shaft Fracture.

BACKGROUND Kinesiology tape indications of use include pain mitigation, neurosensory input, and promotion of circulation. Current evidence suggests that residual functional limitations following intramedullary nailing of the femoral shaft may be due to soft tissue injury and compromise. Absence of Iodinated Contrast Hypersensitivity and Characterization of Gadolinium Utilization in an Interventional Pain Population.

Background: Iodinated contrast media (ICM) allergy labels pose a unique clinical problem for the interventional pain physician due to the drawbacks of gadolinium for enhancement during pain procedures, as well as the reluctance to add to the cumulative steroid burden with steroid premedication. However, the risks of ICM hypersensitivity specific to this setting have not been previously described.

Methods: We aimed to describe the incidence of ICM-induced hypersensitivity during the performance of epidural injections in a large healthcare system.

Longitudinal study of angiotensin peptides in normal and pre-eclamptic pregnancy.

Purpose: To address whether differential regulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system occurs in pre-eclampsia, we performed an analysis of the time course of circulating and urinary profiles of the vasoconstrictor (Ang II) and the vasodilator [Ang-(1-7)] peptides in normal pregnant (NP) and pre-eclamptic (PE) women.

Methods: Urine and plasma samples from 86 nulliparous women were collected prospectively; 67 subjects continued as NP and 19 developed PE. Subjects were enrolled prior to 12 weeks of gestation and plasma and spot urine samples were obtained throughout gestation.

Coil embolization of an enlarging fusiform myxomatous cerebral aneurysm.

Myxomatous cerebral aneurysms are rare sequelae of cardiac atrial myxoma. These aneurysms are generally fusiform, multiple, and distal. Pathogenesis and evolution of these aneurysms is still debated.

The Central Symbiosis of Molecular Biology: Molecules in Mutualism.

As illustrated by the mitochondrion and the eukaryotic cell, little in biology makes sense except in light of mutualism. We have proposed that the ancient ribosome increased in size during early evolution by addition of small folding-competent RNAs. In this Accretion Model, small RNAs and peptides were subsumed onto subunit surfaces, gradually encasing and freezing previously acquired components. The model predicts that appropriate rRNA fragments have inherited local autonomy of folding and local autonomy of assembly with ribosomal proteins (rProteins), and that the rProtein and rRNA are co-chaperones.

Iron mediates catalysis of nucleic acid processing enzymes: support for Fe(II) as a cofactor before the great oxidation event.

Life originated in an anoxic, Fe2+-rich environment. We hypothesize that on early Earth, Fe2+ was a ubiquitous cofactor for nucleic acids, with roles in RNA folding and catalysis as well as in processing of nucleic acids by protein enzymes. In this model, Mg2+ replaced Fe2+ as the primary cofactor for nucleic acids in parallel with known metal substitutions of metalloproteins, driven by the Great Oxidation Event.

Frozen in Time: The History of Proteins.

The ribosome is imprinted with a detailed molecular chronology of the origins and early evolution of proteins. Here we show that when arranged by evolutionary phase of ribosomal evolution, ribosomal protein (rProtein) segments reveal an atomic level history of protein folding. The data support a model in which aboriginal oligomers evolved into globular proteins in a hierarchical step-wise process.

We present a molecular-level model for the origin and evolution of the translation system, using a 3D comparative method. In this model, the ribosome evolved by accretion, recursively adding expansion segments, iteratively growing, subsuming, and freezing the rRNA. Functions of expansion segments in the ancestral ribosome are assigned by correspondence with their functions in the extant ribosome.

Stimulant use in patients with sturge-weber syndrome: safety and efficacy.

Background: Sturge-Weber syndrome is characterized by a facial port-wine birthmark, vascular eye abnormalities, and a leptomeningeal angioma. Attention and behavioral issues are common in Sturge-Weber syndrome. However, literature evidence for stimulant treatment is minimal.

Early-phase clinical trials in the community: results from the national cancer institute community cancer centers program early-phase working group baseline assessment.

Purpose: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) formed an Early-Phase Working Group to facilitate site participation in early-phase (EP) trials. The Working Group conducted a baseline assessment (BA) to describe the sites' EP trial infrastructure and its association with accrual.

Methods: EP accrual and infrastructure data for the sites were obtained for July 2010-June 2011 and 2010, respectively.

Urine vascular biomarkers in Sturge-Weber syndrome.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) consists of a capillary-venous vascular malformation of the brain, skin and eye. Urine vascular biomarkers have been demonstrated to be abnormal in other vascular anomalies and to correlate with clinical severity and progression. The current study investigated the use of urinary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) levels to non-invasively monitor the progression of SWS.

Background: Interest in oral agents for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer (MBC) has increased because many patients prefer oral to i.v. regimens.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a topical treatment for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: NCCTG trial N06CA.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a troublesome chronic symptom that has no proven pharmacologic treatment. The purpose of this double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial was to evaluate a novel compounded topical gel for this problem.

Methods: Patients with CIPN were randomized to baclofen 10 mg, amitriptyline HCL 40 mg, and ketamine 20 mg in a pluronic lecithin organogel (BAK-PLO) versus placebo (PLO) to determine its effect on numbness, tingling, pain, and function.

Nonclassic retinitis pigmentosa: A challenging clinical diagnosis solved by pedigree analysis and electrodiagnostic testing.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe a case of nonclassic retinitis pigmentosa, to highlight ancillary testing tools for proper diagnosis, and to differentiate between common hereditary fundus dystrophies.

Methods: Methods used in this study included complete ophthalmologic evaluation, optical coherence tomography, visual field testing, pedigree analysis, and electrodiagnostic testing.

Results: Reduced vision and photopsia were the initial complaints of a patient who had an overall normal ocular appearance.

Vitamin E supplement use and the incidence of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality in the Framingham Heart Study: Does the underlying health status play a role?

Background: Observational studies generally showed beneficial associations between supplemental vitamin E intake and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk whereas intervention trials reported adverse effects of vitamin E supplements. We hypothesize that these discordant findings result from differing underlying health status of study participants in observational and intervention studies.

Objective: Determine if the relation between supplemental vitamin E intake and CVD and all-cause mortality (ACM) depends on pre-existing CVD.

Auto-SCT has been shown to be a potentially curative treatment for a variety of hematological malignancies. Auto-SCT is dependent on the successful mobilization and collection of hematopoietic stem cells to ensure engraftment. The inability to mobilize sufficient number of hematopoietic stem cells using standard cytokine-assisted mobilization strategies excludes eligible patients from potentially curative auto-SCT.
