1. Ouabain-sensitive 86Rb+ uptake in slices of lactating rabbit mammary gland significantly increased after 20 min or 1 hr of incubation with ovine prolactin (NIH-P-S12; 1 microgram/ml.).

Primary school accidents.

Five hundred and eighteen Otago primary school accidents are described. Falls and accidents described as striking against or struck by a person or object, represented 82 percent of all the accidents. Nearly a third of all accidents resulted in fractures; the upper limb being the most common site of injury.

Effective cell support by repeat plateletpheresis of related donors on the IBM 2997 cell separator.

Forty-three non-HLA-matched donors provided 83 plateletpheresis products for 20 thrombocytopenic patients during a six-month period. The platelet product yield was 4.2 x 10(11) collected in 90 min.

Estimation of anti-D IgG in red blood cell eluates using the specific radioactivity of 125I-labeled IgG: effect of unlabeled, cytophilic IgG.

The specific radioactivity of conventionally prepared 125I IgG anti-D eluates is significantly less (from 1/5 to 1/20) than that of the 125I IgG fraction used to prepare the eluate. This discrepancy is due to the release of unlabeled, cytophilic IgG from normal red blood cells during eluate preparation and does not represent an underestimation of the eluate anti-D IgG content. Cytophilic IgG content of eluates plays an important role in reducing the nonimmunologic binding of labeled antibody IgG.

Accidental injuries in the sixth and seventh years of life: a report from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Child Development Study.

Two hundred and thirty-two (22 percent) of a sample of 1072 children in their sixth and seventh years of life had 273 injuries. Thirty-seven of the children had two or more accidents and 20 children were admitted to hospital as a result of their injuries. Forty-four percent of all the injuries were described as open wounds and the most common site of injury was the head.

Production of allo-anti-Ena by an individual whose red blood cells carry some Ena antigen.

We recently described an individual whose red blood cells appear to carry a hybrid MNSs sialoglycoprotein (SGP). The MN-derived portion of that SGP carries at least two determinants defined by some examples of antibodies that have been called anti-Ena. However, the red blood cells lack a different determinant that is defined by other examples of anti-Ena.

Scalds to preschool children.

A survey of scalds to 64 children under five years of age was undertaken. The results showed that there was a wide variety of circumstances which resulted in these injuries. The significance of developmental aspects is demonstrated, as is the need to modify the child's environment.

The serum of J.R. contains anti-Wrb and her red blood cells are of the phenotype Wr(a-b-).

Malignant melanoma--an overview.

We have presented our experience in light of current practice in the management of malignant melanoma. Central to considerations of adequate management is the question of precise definition of the extent of the disease as determined by histologic evaluation, determination of the depth of penetration and assessment of the extent of spread. Wide surgical excision remains the most important consideration with perfusion therapy, in our view playing a key role in the management of extremity melanoma.

Smooth muscle tumors of the stomach and small bowel.

Smooth muscle tumors of the stomach and small bowel, although rare, have a favorable prognosis when recognized and treated promptly. This review of 33 patients with leiomyoma, leiomyblastoma, or leiomyosarcoma of the stomach and small intestine reveals that all but two were treated by resection of the tumor, with good results.

Primary malignant hemangioendothelioma of the liver: survival following nonoperative treatment.

A case of primary hemangioendothelioma is presented. Following autodearterialization, the patient received 5-fluorouracil orally and total hepatic radiation. To date, 30 months later, he remains alive and active with residual hepatic defect on liver scan, but no indication of progression of disease.
